whilst replacing my alternator the other day, i noticed on cranking the engine over that i have a gap between the exhaust manifold and downpipe. i know this because i got a face full of soot (sp?) :D

now... do i have to replace both (cos its a 84 and its like 1 big rust pipe) or can i jam something in to fill it? hylomar? silly*unt?

what have you lot done in the past?

Plumbers mait is good. I've used it to plug an hole where the pipe joined the silencer. it looks like a tube of putty with the black on the outside white in the centre. you cut a piece off then mix it with ur fingers and it sets hard in about an hour. & its fully cured in 24hrs used for sealing leaking tanks/boilers & pipework. but good stuff B&Q sell it

sounds like a plan... so it resists heat good then? will regular loctite filler be too brittle under heat?

G

Oh aye it's brilliant stuff I wouldn't bother with the loctite. Is it an actual hole or a leaking joint. if it's the latter seperate the two half and use it like a gasket. just make sure the surfaces are fairly clean. A bit of water on the joints will help it stick better. If it's an hole stick some in the hole then spread some on the pipe and put a bit of tin can over it and put a jubilee clip over that for a permanent seal. you can smooth it down with a wet brush or even by wetting ur finger.

unfortunately it is in the joint, but like i said, its 1 big rusted up pipe, if i try to seperate it, im going to break it!

will prob just run some of that plumbing stuff around the outside of the joint.

Like Slob sez don't try Plumbers Mate it's a non-setting type sticky snotty spunky ****ey splathery gobbo used to seal baths an shower trays to walls an things. Reckon Pikey has got mixed up with summat else but it's definitely not Plumbers Mate.

It's plumbers mait not plumbers mate. come's in a tube about 3" long and 3/4" diameter it looks like a minature stick of rock when you look at the end of it centres cream colored with a black section round the outside.
