Hi,
I created a thread a week or two ago regarding the excessive smoke from the exhaust and Nodge very kindly advised cleaning the Inlet Manifold. As I"ve not got a garage I will probably clean the Inlet Manifold when the weather improves, but in the meantime would adding ARCHOIL ART6400D make any difference?
Their advert seems to imply that their product cleans everything!
cheers

It'll only clean where the fuel goes. The inlet manifold get fresh air, exhaust gas from recirculation and a fine oil mist thrown from the the turbo bearings.
It's this mixture that clogs the inlet manifold. The hot exhaust gas partially ignites the oil mist in the plentiful air. The resulting soot is what clogs up the manifold.
Adding fuel system cleaners will only clean the fuel system however.

Thanks once again Nodge 68. Is cleaning the inlet manifold an easy job to do?. I"m a 75 year old bloke, reasonably fit but only a rudimentary tool kit and mechanical knowledge. I do however have the a Haynes manual which is all gobbledy gook to me.

I haven"t had a chance to look at the Air filter, but will be replacing it, hopefully sometime this week. Thanks for that.
You'll need a long allan key or an allan for a 1/4" socket set for that, 5 or 8mm I think. You'll never reach with the usual short allan keys.

Long 5mm Allen key is what you need

In theory a clogging air filter shouldn't make black smoke on the TD4. The MAF monitors the actual air entering the turbo. So as the ECU knows how much air is going in, it knows how much fuel to add. If less air goes in, less fuel is added.
A clogged inlet manifold will cause black smoke. The reason for this is simple. The ECU monitors inlet manifold pressure. It calculates how much fuel is needed for a particular boost pressure. However the boost pressure won't be the same for all cylinders. The coked up cylinders (normally cylinders 1 and 2) will get less air. This makes those cylinders receive too much fuel for the available Oxygen, hence the smoke.

Edit: Corrected to make more sense.

Are these arse about face Nodge? I love your posts and always learn from them but this one has me confused.

Not unusual! :p

Nodge has just miss typed the words air and fuel in the wrong place in the last sentence.

Shuould be : This makes those cylinders receive to much fuel for the air, hence the smoke.

Sorry Ali. It was a long day!!

Thanks GG. Now edited to make sense;)

Lol, poor Nodge. One awkward bugger pulling you up on your grammar and the other on your wording.
How do you put up with us? :p

My Grammar isn't great to be honest. Not enough attention paid at school with a dose of dyslexia thrown in!!
It made sense in the end. We'll call it a collaboration.;)

Thanks Guys, But is cleaning the Manifold something a numpty like me can do?
Removing the manifold isn't difficult. Cleaning it is a mucky jobs. There are lots of different products too use. I like Kerosene to soften the goop, then wash out with petrol or carb cleaner to finish.

Didn't mean nothing by it :)

I have a knack for spelling and grammar, so mistakes jump off the page at me. I bet you have knacks for things I'm crap at - everyone's different, and it takes all sorts to make a world.

Anyway, OP, I use Gunk to clean the inlet manifold - let it soak for a good while. A Draper bottle brush set is useful too. Ideally, get hold of a spare from a scrappy so you can have a good go at it without taking your car off the road for too long.

No offence taken guineafowl 21 ;)

It's a good idea to get a replacement inlet manifold and clean that up in advance. Then it's just a straightforward swap;)

Are all TD4 Inlet Manifolds the same? If I order one from a Breaker how will I know if it will fit my 2003 Serengeti. Are there any number I need to look out for? Or is there anyone out there that has one for sale? Forgot to mention. My TD4 is an Auto. Does this make any difference?

All the same as far as I know. Don't over pay for it though. They change hands for £15 to £25 including shipping on Ebay;)

Cheers Nodge 68. Whilst you"re on,can I ask. When I bought my Freelander I knew it had a ripped drivers seat which I have repaired to the best of my ability, but everytime I open the car door It drives me beserk just looking at it. I noticed a company on ebay were selling new Freelander 2 Front Seat Cushion Covers. Do you happen to know if anyone sells Freelander 1 Front seat cushion covers, I mean the original pattern and not the waterproof ones some use to cover ripped seats.
