All cadlean here (yes more questions) Land Rover new owner (6 months)

Please can someone help identify my starter motor (see attached pics) I have the dreaded click but nothing turning over I can short the motor into spinning and the same for the Bendix

So my thoughts are remove the two nuts holding the solenoid body and take a look at it. But 6 mm socket to small and 7 mm to big could this be imperial ? it is 1986 diesel NA

I asked for identification as if I need to replace the solenoid / stater I am now sure what one and cannot see a marking plate

Any help you can give would be appreciated

Sure its not the solenoid itself? Clicking would suggest so. You'd get more of a whining noise if its the motor.
 
The clicking in the cab is most likely to be the starter relay. If you can start the engine by shorting the starter motor contacts, then it could be that this relay is faulty. If not the relay, then depending on the starter motor you have, you may be able to strip and clean the motor and solenoid.

Thanks for the advice, I pulled the big green relay (nearest the driver) and tested it with a maplin relay tester after 10 cycles it passed. You mentioned shorting the starter motor, how do i do this and what position does the ignition switch need to be in to get her to start?

sorry for delay in replying but working on getting her ready for mot, also do you have ant idea what model the starter motor is as i will try to repair if i can thanks cadlean
 
Update

I worked out how to short the solenoid (I think think the right method?) I shorted the red mains post on the solenoid with the small spade terminal, the starter worked and she started up much to my relief as it has been several weeks. (I had the ignition switch in the run position)

So my question is does that mean the solenoid is buggered and need to remove and try to repair or could it be something else?

my only question is any idea what model it is as I have done a bit a digging on this forum as to how to remove the solenoid, but I cannot see a makers plate anywhere I even looked between the starter and the engine with a small mirror but no luck?

Get yourself into the Defender section and ask in there. There are guys in there with knowledge of these that is positively scarey :eek:
 
Hi hoping someone can continue to help me (dogsbody pointed me in this direction)

I need to repair the solenoid on my 1986 ex army 110 I have done bit a digging on this forum as to how to remove the solenoid, but I cannot see a makers plate anywhere I even looked between the starter and the engine with a small mirror but no luck?

Please can someone have a look at the pictures and see if they can identify the beast so I can buy new bit

OK, on your previous post you said that when you shorted the red (from the battery) to the spade connector it worked and your engine turned over.

This would indicate that there isn't a fault with either the solenoid or the starter motor, and your fault is somewhere between the start circuit relay and the solenoid spade.

Check that you have 12V where you should have it by disconnecting the spade and turning the ignition switch to start.

If you don't have a supply there then runs a white/blue bit of wire back from the spade to the starter relay, and get back to me ;)
 
Starters are the same as the standard 2.5 na and 200 tdi.

My advice would be to get the starter refurbished or get a new one. The solenoid sticking is often caused by problems with the windings in the starter.

What is the problem you are experiencing?

This is why it's not a good idea to post the same question in multiple threads.

If anyone posts a thread and then decides it would be better elsewhere please report the 1st post and ask for it to be moved.

It's a lot less faff than merging threads and I'm a lazy sod and resent valuable cake eating time being wasted.
