Disco 2 Ex Air Bags now coils but got air hissing?

The Air suspension was removed and coil springs in place by a previous owner on my Disco 2 auto, Every now and then I hear a hissing, like escaping pressured air, when it happens I haven't had a chance to dive under and find the source as it doesn't last long and the first time i noticed it and it may have been coincidence but as soon as my daughter opened the driver side rear door it stopped, it sounds like from the rear end.

What system was used to fill the air suspension and can it be removed / capped off easily if not being used?
I guess with no air suspension there is no self leveling though the dash light seems to come on after i have reversed the rear end over some higher ground like a pavement, don't know if it has a sensor at the back, in fact I know bugger all about it and I love a new learning curve :)
 
Thanks Neilly I will have a look at that now while i have ten minutes, i actually bought my first haynes manual in many years after getting this as I thought it would help, I will use it to look through the fuses and any pics as reference :)
I might get an app or get something for my laptop to plug into it so i can do it myself, though getting my son to help would be a good idea.
 
Diagnostics for the TD5 D2 is not so simple as getting an app.

Which is why a lot of us end up paying a wedge of cash for the bespoke kit.

Download the rave manual for use on a laptop, will be better than the haynes manual.

I started to download the Rave manual BUT when I noticed it was 600mb or something I stopped, we are on a data tarrif (live on a boat 50% and a dodge truck 50%) and only got a couple of gig left out of around 100gb so am going to wait till the 7th feb and get another 100 gig to play with :)
 
Ok fair enough,

To be certain which fuse / relay you could pull for testing as the SLS and the ABS have a tie in together, it would be worth sending a shout out to Sierrafery.

Have a search for nanocom or hawkeye.

I have and prefer a nanocom, this was discussed in the last week. But you are looking at approx £340 for this brand new. A few come up secnd hand so it is worth keeping an eye out. There was a hawkeye for sale recently for £190 on the same thread.

I fully concur with @neilly, it does sound like the air system wasn't correctly turned off when it was changed to springs. I also agree about diagnostics and RAVE, at least that's free!:)

I do find it sad when owners modify the rear suspension from air to steel springs, often because of a leaking air bag. Once that happens the cry goes up to rip it off and bury it then put steel springs on instead, when all that was probably needed was an understanding of the system, which is quite easy and the replacement of both bags at the same time. The ride height sensors are cheap enough too, and easy to change. Honestly I've never seen the problem.

I was told by a few people they had had problems with the air bags / system and had converted to coils, I will have a real good look underneath to see whats there and what isn't, sounds to me like whoever removed the bags didn't remove the compressor (my son has already asked if he can have it for one of his robot projects if it is and i remove it) and didn't cap it off properly.
As for haynes manuals, I know they are for amatures really but helpful for quick reference to wiring etc but I am old school and learn from doing it myself, it is very rare for me to pay someone else for mechanics, though the old dodges don't have any of this ecu and computer stuff to go wrong, thats why i love em so much :)
 
Nothing wrong with haynes manuals,

I use mine if I need to as I keep it in the car. But for a planned job and a good reference then I will always go back to the Rave file and use that.

Any issues give us a shout.

If the system was not disabled the SLS warning should be on and get audible warnings too(unless some ugly bodge was made), also as long as the bags are not there anymore i can't see where the air could come from cos the system is supposed to release air after the ignition is off not to energise the compressor though by oddity it happens... so remove relay R5 if it's still there and see if that hissing is gone or not
