Well quite an epic afternoon! Went to collect the head gasket, bolts, and head set, then the head after a skim, and got home. Drove the Disco to mikes and it drove absolutely fine with no overheating. I had previously blocked off the matrix so we plumbed it back in and went for a drive. Had heaters and no overheating (thought the 4 bottles of kseal may have finally worked lol) then i lost heaters :(
So on with the head swap!

I got excited at this point, as the head bolts weren't tight at all, id even say they were loose. Undone them with a ratchet with ease!
Due to the water in No.1 we looked closely and saw this:

Thought it may have been a crack, so headed up to PEC where i had the head skimmed, and borrowed some chemicals. Came back and tried them:

Mike fisting my hole:

But this showed no sign of cracking. So got on fitting the new head:

So all back together, and run up lovely, steady temp and had heaters. Drove home and kept the ideal temperature, but lost heaters :( Dont know whether its because it needs topping up from being completely drained and we've not topped it up enough, or more likely theres another issue. So either the block is actually ****ed and we couldnt see it, or the matrix is ****ed.
Tomorrow ill check the levels and go for another drive and see whats what. But at the mo im keeping a steady driving temp so you never know, but as you can imagine im gutted :(:(:(
But i must say a massive thanks to Mike for helping, and Rob (PEC) for the loan of aforementioned chemicals, and the head skim!

Weird. We pulled one of the pipes off and with the engine running got the water to pump out of it to show the flow direction. Just can't remember which one it was

Well tonights update as follows!
Undid both matrix pipes. First one on top of the head, and it flowed out of the head. So naturally youd think it would come out of the other side of the matrix once reconnected, but no! Its flowing from the head AND the rad side to the matrix which might be why ive no heaters, as its not actually flowing through it, just pushing against each other. Its warm enough in the cabin to take the chill off but not actually warm at all. BUT..... When its at high revs you do get a bit of heat. Not hot, but some. So theres either an air lock still, or the water pump is insufficient. We put the hose through the matrix last time so it was clear then. When i can get to a hose ill try it again.
The engine doesnt overheat now though which is marvellous!

Sounds like the water pump is a bit weak, have you got good flow through the top hose do you know? Least it's saying cool now though...
