Here we go again! - have I bought a dog?:(
Driving home last night the engine just dies! - look at instruments - everything dead - electrical failure? - no - radio still on!
After car coasts to a halt, still nothing on instrument cluster (ignition still on). Turn off radio, Check elec windows - all working! turn off ignition, swear  (alot) try ignition - its all there! restart engine and drive off. 50 yards down the road, engine dies - no instruments - before i coast to a halt it starts again  (still in Drive). Another 50 yards, engine dies - no Instruments - pull into car park, turn off ignition, turn on ignition - nothing. Turn ignition off and swear some more:( . Turn ignition back on - instruments back - start car and drive off - no probs all the way home (3 miles). :(
It would appear that:-
As no instruments - its an electrical problem!
As Instruments out, but other electrics working - it is localised to one circuit?
It seems like it is either :
Loose connection?
Safety cut out cutting in and out?
Solenoid/Relay faulty?

Have you folks got any ideas - I am beginning to get paranoic!

Hi,

To me it looks as you are a too nice guy for your car, only when 'swearing' and 'swearing a lot' it seems it will keep running. :D Never been in the same situation but I can imagin how you feel. Maybe this problem is known and a visit to the dealer might help ? Some cam sensors or so gone wrong? Good luck.

The main can bus electrical run at 500,000 bits per second sending information, they connect engine ecm instrument pack and auto box, this is on a loop and all 3 talk to each other other ecms are joined in as well such as abs systems, without going into to mucch detail it can be any of the ecus breaking down or poor wiring or intermitant break it could be just a bad connection but its knowing where to start or explain to you were to start, plugging it in would be a lot easier but i know no cheaper but if an ecu needs replacing it will have to go on a a computor any way sorry tiga, will give more info if you are feling brave

According to local Landrover specialist - it is related to Inlet manifold valve problem - they checked with diagnostic pack - found...
Inlet manifold valve stuck open
Throttle stuck
Gearbox ECU out
Engine ECU out
plus a few more for good luck! - will have to wait and see after inlet manifold replacement.

wow  what a disturbing news!! I thought it wont fall out or even stuck open since its electronically controlled when to open and close. I am still waiting the s&h of the inlet manifold from uk.Better call them tonite before I get stuck on the road....

Further to my message at start of thread re cutting out of engine and instruments. Have now had Inlet manifold replaced and CU faults reset.

Last night same thing again:mad: . Driving in rush hour traffic (thank God slowly) and Car dies on me at roundabout:eek: - No Engine running, No instruments - cant start - just wait for a min or so - retry and carry on. Same thing happens again on dual carriageway:eek: , but cuts back in as coasting to a stop. Happens again when aproaching T junction  - car coasts to a halt - harzard lights on - wait a min - ignore horns and gesticulations from cars behind  - restart and carry on. Havent got a clue (nothing new here) about what is causing it - I wiould think it could be a faulty relay, safety system or Engine management system:confused: .
Does anyone have a circuit diagram showing power to instruments and low tension circuits as this is most obvious symptom?
Otherwise it looks like an expensive trip to Landrover - it will be difficult to dioagnose because it is intermittent - just  dangerous when it happens!!!

So it was not the inlet manifold as LR told then. Probably the cam sensor, I read a thread regarding this but it was problem starting the car when its hot. or could it be the immobilaser as its a known problem. Sorry cant really help you...

Ta for reply Dearot
HMMMM!! I am inclined to think it aint the imobiliser as the windows still work - I would have thought the Imobilser would kill everything? - Can anyone out there confirm or not? Tigga?

:) Problem Resolved!!!
Problem was traced to Connections corroded under Fuse box! not an obvious cause as the Fuse box had to be removed to see problem. Also not a common problem apparently - " Oooer - nevva seen THAT before!!"
Lol;)

hi, im having the same problem with my 1.8 petrol s reg could you tell me if the fuse box is under the dash on the driverside, it keeps cutting out on me i have had a compression test done and everything is coming up ok,thanks

Fuse box on mine is on nearside engine compartment. Problem was with corroded terminals UNDER the fuse box - so you cant see them easily and need to remove fuse box to get at terminals. Since re-terminating - no problems!
Well none other than the hill descent warning light still comes on randomly. Only cure seems to be stop, turnoff ignition, turn ignition back on and "hey presto" cleared till next time...!?

good luck in your investigations.
