No burning smell. Off outside now to spend an hour underneath...Take the motor off, get someone to move the gear lever across the gate, with the ignition on and look to see if the motor operates. If the motor operates, move the gear lever to low, turn off the ignition and refit the motor ensuring the shaft engages with transfer box and doesn't move as you fit it. Then try and see if it will shift to high.
If the motor does not operate when off the transfer box, it's likely that it being jammed has blown the drive transistors in the ECU which resides under the passenger seat, any smell of burning down there?
OK, so the motor is turning. The shaft turns freely with the motor off. But it still won't clonk into high. ??When the motor is off can you physically turn the shaft for Hi/lo to check its not jammed somehow?

Did you use a manual when you rebuilt it?Could I have put the transfer box together without the pinion that pulls the gears across properly engaged? So the rod turns but it isn't pulling the gears across?
I think it's pointing to me having put it together wrong. I'm thinking the forks may not be engaged in the gear that gets pulled properly. When first fit, I engaged low and heard it clunk into low but then it seems to move back and forward freely but doesn't pull the gears.Did you use a manual when you rebuilt it?
I would find it hard to think it could be bolted together if something was wrong/not seated properly, but if something got left out .
If the motor moves as the position of the stick, the shaft moves freely, then at this point it sort of points towards something you have done.
If the shaft turns can you select neutral? Or does nothing change when turning it?
I cant really help as have not taken 1 apart. In the link I posted earlier there is a file for the transfer box too.
I wonder if @Bemble would know if it could be put together wrong?

Yes.Is this potentially the problem? Parts circled in blue...
Yes.
If you put it in then did put the arm in the correct place.
The arm goes over the lip, not in front or behind.
40secs in

It must have slipped out of the tabs as I fought with it on my knees... in the snow...
My knees are working OK. The pain they give me when i use them as designed is another matter...I guess we know what your doing next? how are your knees .
I really don't know any other way, if you cant select any other position by turning the shaft.

Good luck with it young man, they are bloody heavy.Aha! It appears I neglected to pop the little sleeve (circled red) that goes onto the selector rod back on. Now fitted, box back together, it seems to work as it should.
Now... time to fight it back off the ground and refit.
I have adapted my trolley jack to assist...
Yes. This will be the second lift for me and my 52yo body. On axle stands... in the melted snow. Such fun keeping old motors alive!Good luck with it young man, they are bloody heavy.
52? A real youngster! I can't work in the cold as I have Reynaud's syndrome and my hands cease to work.Yes. This will be the second lift for me and my 52yo body. On axle stands... in the melted snow. Such fun keeping old motors alive!
Hey, me too. Dead man's fingers and toes down to the second knuckle. Such a painful thing.52? A real youngster! I can't work in the cold as I have Reynaud's syndrome and my hands cease to work.
