My 4.4 has done 35k since I got it on lpg with no flash lube system and is fine.
That Ajv8 is a stunning engine although parts are expensive for genuine (maf. Plug coils etc for example)
Don't know when the lpg was originally fitted to mine but I would guess it's done well over 60k on it by now.
Sadly, mine might have to go soon.

many thks, heard that ref the 8 x speed, must admit have the 6x speed zf and that’s really nice

Are there any bad issues with The jag 4.4 petrol version that ur aware of plse

indeed ref electrics , can just be one bad connector that causes havoc to the canbus

The Jag engine is absolutely sublime but occasionally the coolant pipe between the V goes bang.

The early jag AJV8 was crap as my son in law will testify. No knowledge of later ones but it seems to me there are no good engines in the JLR vehicles, it's a matter of choosing the least worst.

No idea on "best" engine Gary, they all seem to have their Achilles-heel.
The original 3.5 V8 was pretty bullet-proof, but woefully under-performing.
I like my 4.6 V8 despite its many issues.

@gstuart, your on the hunt for one aren't youo_O....

dam it , I’ve been found out, lol

have been looking for a V8 4.4 D3, will have to be an auto, I made a huge mistake by test driving one Lol, , OMG what an awesome beast, however the ones I’ve seen were a pile of crap, apart from the engine I knew what I was looking at and was amusing listening the crap I was being told as I parked my D3 just up the road so they didn’t know what I turned up in , sneaky u see, snigger

don’t mind if I spend a year looking for one a good one as I want to keep it at least 5 x years , had this one 4 x years already

Am also questioning ref the LPG , if to get one with or without it , inc if it did have LPG is what the costs are vs without

plus wish to get one under 100,00 miles

will also like to spend time learning about the 4.4 as would hate to get one with a known fault that if I get abit of knowledge behind me I’ll know what to look out for

many thks as always

In pure cost terms, mine on lpg is equivalent to doing around 30 mpg on petrol alone but we have pretty cheap lpg up here.
I can get about 80l in the tank when it's stone empty and that does around 250 miles. Probably a small amount of petrol use during that on the odd occasion I floor it and when it's cold so in reality it's possibly around 220-230 miles on 80litres.
You can feel a slight reduction in performance on lpg but it's still pretty quick.
I was warned that using it without flashlube would kill it but it didn't have it and I didn't have time or inclination to fit it.
No idea how many miles it did on lpg before I bought it but I've done over 30k in it and it's now getting close to 140k on the clock and still no issues.
It is a fabulous engine and the NA one doesn't have the pipe in the vee to burst.
It's not the gruntiest engine I've ever used at the bottom end but it absolutely sings at anything above 2.5k rpm.

hiya

many thks for the info and that’s extremely helpful

funny enough had just been reading this

http://www.amrautos.co.uk/index.php/lpg-systems

must admit when I test drove one I noticed how smooth it was and indeed does take off if booted , also extremely quiet , may i ask please what are the rough costs for servicing , plus assume u don’t have to worry about timing belts

are there anything in particular to look out for or weaknesses etc plse

On non LPG , would u roughly get , round town mpg 14 and on a run 24mpg Plse

may i ask please what are the costs ref Petrol VS LPG , just trying to work out the comparison of the savings if LPG is used

thks again and very grateful for the feedback

Drooling, lol

I pay 54p/l for my lpg at the moment so it's still worth it to me but whilst petrol is only 99p/l at the moment, my cost per mile is probably more like doing 25-26mpg but once petrol goes back up to 1.20/l then i'll be back in the land of milk and honey!!
I have done my own servicing as needed and it's no more expensive than anything else. Gearbox filter and oil change is a bit dear due to the fluid being mega expensive but you will get that with any modern box i suspect.
I have a slight issue on mine in that it runs a bit rough for the first 20 seconds in the morning and occasionally throws EML on. I suspect i have a plug coil on the way out and they're not easy to find and bloody expensive when you do.
Engine sensors can be expensive, upstream O2 sensors are wideband so will be more expensive than standard lambdas.
General running around on petrol gets me around 18mpg on the commute to work and back which is around 8 miles each way with about half of that through town and half on an open road at 40-60mph depending on traffic.
Motorway mpg is around 23-24 if driven sensibly and by that i mean cruise set to 80mph (76-77 in reality)
I towed a trailer weighing just over 3 tons just after i bought it all the way down to Poole and back (Around 270 miles each way) and it returned 19.5mpg on that trip so not too shabby.

I would say if you can get lpg for around 60-65p then it will cost about same per mile as a diesel version but much more fun. If you're paying above 65p then probably not worth the cost of a conversion. That said, if you find one with LPG already on it then that will be a bonus.
No idea if the D4 will be heavier than the L322 (I know the D3 was a heavy lump) so don't know how your figures will stack up.
Let me know if you need any further info.

One small bugbear of mine is that the oil top up is an effin PITA. The filler is just behind the bulkhead on the L322 so you need a funnel with a bendy tube on it to top up. It's not a big issue but it pees me off every time as it would have been so easy to fix!!
