Engine swap

Engine hoist is the only special tool I can think of. The hoist has to have a fairly high lift/long reach as the front panel is non-removeable on a Discovery.

If you can't get a high lift hoist, you can take of the front panel.
Just drill out the spot welds.
Refit and weld up the holes.:)

I took my engine out in Zimbabwe with a mate to do a clutch swap. Only two special tools apart from a decent hoist are the spanner to remove the fan, 32mm but thin (left hand thread by the way), and if you are going to separate the engine and gearbox to get them out (which is probalbly easier as they are both bloody heavy), you need a very long extension on your socket set to get the top gearbox bell housing bolts out. We had about 3ft of extension bars! Remove engine mounts early, and lower the engine to give yourself room to get the bar over the top of the gearbox.

As I say, everything is VERY heavy!

Never taken the gearbox out, but I believe you need to be careful when undoing the final fixings, as it will be off balance, and may try to topple sideways off a standard trolley jack. Land rover have a special tool shaped like a V which fits on top of the jack and holds the whole thing vertical.

Good Luck!

Do I need to register a change of engine with the dvla?

You must notify DVLA on the V5C reg doc about the engine change. You may need to supply a copy of the invoice or a statement from a garage confirming the engine number and c.c.

As a matter of fact, a police mate of mine says that if your Landy is nicked, and subsequently recovered, or the engine is subsequently found elsewhere, it makes things a lot easier to trace if the engine number is on the DVLA record.
