Hey all hows it goin!
havent been about for a bit but back to the p38 woes!
I need to swap my engine over........... have a 4.6 thor and was wondering what needs to be changed to fit a 4.0l into it.
I was only thinking of doing this as I cant find a good 4.6 but can find a few low mileage 4.0ls.

I know there the same except for the cubic capacity but will it run on my ecu or does that have to be swapped? and does anything else have to be changed?

cheers guys
Rob

I'd wait for a decent 4.6 to come up. Might be easier just buying another one though.

I've got a suspicion the gearboxes are different although they might be interchangeable. James Martin would probably know.

I'd also guess the engine ECU would need reprogramming for the security code in the BECM or possibly swapping over but if the latter I have no idea if it fits / can work on the different engine.

Need a V8 petrolhead!

The 4.0 will mate to the 4.6 gearbox, ratios are the same.
I would have thought your ECU would run the smaller engine OK, it doesn't know what engine is fitted just the amount of air drawn over the MAF.
Not easy to swap the engine ECU as the ZF4HP24 box fitted to the 4.6 uses (or may use) a CAN BUS ECU which is different to the 4HP22 box ECU fitted to the 4.0.
