I got sold a lemon at the weekend.... Should have known better - 2001 Freelander V6 auto with multi point LPG conversion and genuine 31k on the clock - immaculate condition and seemed ok on test drive - Got it home - and once it is hot, oil light flickers on tickover - Dropped it off to a mechanic who has today told me that the main bearings are shot and it will either need a full engine rebuild or another engine - which in his opinion will be cost prohibitive.

Now whilst I shall be pursuing the seller through the courts (car was described in writing as running just as well as when it came off the production line!) for a refund (currently not returning my calls) - If worst comes to the worst any suggestions on how much I might be able to get this fixed for?

oh dear, another one!
wonderful cars aren't they?

you're looking at a repair bill of £4 to £5k, if you can find someone to do it (many garages won't touch them because they don't want to guarantee the repair).

best visit the seller with a few mates and a few baseball bats.

Dopeydawgs yo man.
He will most likely tell ya that it is only the wiffle ball and they all do that. The KV6 is a fantastic engine.

keep looking on e-bay - or change it for a Rover 220Turbo lump.

Tell me more about swapping the engine for a Rover 220 turbo lump?

Are there any other engine alternatives - bodywork and interior are immaculate would be a shame to scrap her.

I am taking the arse hole who misrepresented her on sale to the small claims court - I have found out from ringing a lot of garages in his area that he had the car booked in recently for head gasket failuire where the sleeves had slipped? presume that is what has cooked the engine and worn the ends and main bearings?

The garage have sent me a copy of their invoice - on which they have stated they would not guarantee the work -

Sorry to hear that you've been conned, it's happened to me in the past. Hope you get some joy through small claims.

Update - Managed to buy a brand new engine still in its crate from ebay for just under a grand - now need to find someone to fit it for me...

Are there any of you out there who would like the work, or can anyone recommend a mechanic somewhere near Northampton who would fit the engine for me?

Try Rick at RM Motors in Rushden. Really knows his stuff, and is usually up to his ears in work, which probably explains why he too doesn't usually touch the 2.5!

But as its a new motor rather than an iffy rebuild he might be happy to give it a go.

Update - new engine fitted by very nice chap in Wolverhampton - Im picking the car up tomorrow - will let you all know how I get on.....

Wonderful buy, have they got anymore? Feel like buying one as a spare!

If its the blue one off eblag its been sold a dozen times in last 6 months...great motor if you can get a good one...

Bollocks to the baseball bats...air-nailer and a tree in the wilderness works wonders...never fails to get full refund ;-)

Don't need violence - small claims court will get me my result - especially since I am now armed with a report of the faults on the "running as well as it came off the production line" engine and invoices for the new engine and the fitting . As well as a report from Stratstone that confirms customer new the engine was not to spec which is why they would not guarantee the undisclosed head gasket repair.....

I will get far more satisfaction taking the B**tard to court and bringing the bailiffs in if he decides he is still not going to pay afterwards... He has a convertible saab - that should cover the costs.... lol.

Thought I would give you all an update - I took the b*****rd to county court for the cost of the new engine and having it fitted...... and I won!

He had to pay me Just short of 2 grand - and the judge gave him a lecture and a county court judgement! He paid up pronto so his credit rating wouldnt be completely knackered .... and even had to pay me my petrol and expenses in getting to court...

Judge was quite clear :

Ebay contract is formed at end of auction based on the description given to the vehicle - NOT based on any subsequent road test....

If vehicle does not conform to description, you can prosecute to put vehicle into the condition it was described in - so him claiming vehicle drove as well as the day it came off the production line meant he had to pay for my NEW engine! - Result or what?

Same happened to me with my Rangerover 2.5 deisel.

2 days after warranty expired (from new) engine 'exploded'.

LR Solution = new engine...I had a complete fit when they told me the price...and then ofc ourse was the vat and extortionate labour cost on top.

I sold it to another dealer with the engine in a box in the boot.

It was a very sad day. though.
