engine problems

yup they definitely choose their moments, like when all the friggin horse shows are goin on and the lass is without a towing vehicle......

i've tried swapping plugs aboot and then the HV cables & cleaned up the distributor but no joy. definitely looks mechanical, still getting a burble in the lube oil and the carb is spitting a bit. i'm just going to get it to a garage the morn as i've run out of time before im back offshore, plus i've not got the tools/bits or a skooby as to whats wrong! exthusiasim and a will to dismantle arn't going to solve this one in a hurry!!

aye, it might be a simple engine but its an even simpler person trying to fix it!

still i'd rather be fannyin aboot wi my landy than the peugot 106 and citroen saxo my wee bro currently has in a million bits while he swapps engines! the last conundrum he had was one ECU has a 4 pin plug and the other has a 6 pin one?!???!?!

so i'm still trying to sort my petrol engine (got side tracked along the way), i've got all the pistons out and was expecting to find something obviously wrong but all looks ok! only fault i've found so far was that the big end bolts on number 4 were bent (making splitting the big end cap rather difficult). this was the piston that wasnt firing, all the other ones came apart with no problems. anyone seen this happen before or know how the bolts could become bent? i've had a good look and can't see any uneven wear on the piston bore or shell bearings.

Have a close look at the wide sides of the conrod to see if some asshole has for some reason had the rod clamped tight in a big vice for any reason. Occasionally misguided experts do these things.

You want to be VERY suspicious of big-end bolts that have ever been bent.

Was the big end cap fitted the right way round? That matters a LOT.

can't see any vice marks and it was put together the right way round only damage other than being bent is that the bolt threads are a bit worn. i'm just going to try and get a couple of new bolts and bin these ones.

i'll get it running again one day!
