I always use Semi Synthetic 10W-40 ACEA A3/B3 A3/B4 Triple X diesel from euro carparts.
TRIPLE QX 10w40 Diesel SemiSyn Engine Oil 5ltr

If the price is right I will use Mobil Super 10W-40 diesel oil sometimes you can get it for £22

from the LR handbook :

~~~~~
petrol vehicles : 1.8 litre and 2.5 litre V6 :
use a 10W/40 oil meeting specification ACEA: A3 and having a viscosity band recommended for the temperature range of your locality.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

diesel vehicles :

use a 0W/30, 5W/30, 5W/40, 5W/50, 10W/30, 10W/40, or 10W/60 oil meeting specification ACEA: A3 and B3
and having a viscosity band recommended for the temperature range of your locality.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
temp range protection :
0W/30 .. -30c to 35c
5W/30 .. -30c to 35c
5W/40 .. -30c to 50c
5W/50 .. -30c to 50c
10W/30 .. -10c to 30c
10W/40 .. -10c to 50c
10W/60 .. -10c to 50c
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

local dealership here uses 5W/30 semi-synthetic for diesels

read on one oil website that 5W/40 or 0W/40 be better for 'tuned' ( remapped or tuning-box) diesels in the u.k.
.. or one that's doing much towing ..

Thanks for that it does do a lot of towing (it works for a living) and has a blue spark multi map box fitted so will probably look at a 5/40 oil.

if your engine has done over 20-30000 then use 10/40 semi synthetic
if it has done less use 5 /30 semi synthetic as advised by my local LR dealer.

Thanks for that teddywood1 I can see where you are coming from but a fully synthetic 5/30 5/40 will give instant protection from cold especially in cold weather where as 10/40semi isn't as good especially in winter . It has a smaller temperature range .
