Engine oil expert needed

I need an oil expert or someone who understands what the different codes mean. At work we run a fleet of HGV's and have a barrel of 15w/40 (API SL/CL-4) engine oil that used to be used in the older vehicles in the fleet. We have now replaced these vehicles and do not have anything that takes this specification of oil. My company is planning on paying to dispose of this oil. However there are two of us in the company running land rovers with a 200tdi engine and they are happy to give it to us if it is is suitable. Does anyone know if this will be suitable for a 200tdi engine?





P.s. both of us running land rovers also have second series III vehicles, one has a 2.25 diesel and one has a 2.5NA diesel will it be suitable for either of those?

For the series vehicles as well?

15/40 semi synthetic should be fine for the 200 Tdi. For the others mentioned not so good see this. http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/Rec_Lubes.htm

Yes it will be fine. They're not fussy and API SL/CL-4 in 15W40 is more than good enough for older Land Rover engines.

Well worth looking at the ACEA numbers in your case A3/B3 A3/B4
Oil blenders tend to like putting all their approved numbers on their containers whereas just one glance at the viscosity and ACEA number tells you what you need to know, the special wording and merc/usa army/cat approvals are lovely but its the ACEA code you want

I reckon the tdi engines will be fine, and its worth trying in the older machines BUT keep a close eye on the oil level as they may like a drink more than normal.

Until my current job I hadnt bought engine oil for the last 25 plus yrs unless I needed something special ie 20/50 or weirdo trans oil, all my own cars ran on the older 15/40 truck oil.
