Hi guys!

I have just got my car back from the garage after having the head gasket fixed. They have at the same time replaced all gaskets, oil and oil filters and a pump to the oilsystem.

Car ran good the first day but yesterday I seemed to be misfiring on start up but getting better when hot. Today all hell broke lose. The car is shuddering, clearly misfiring and the yellow check engine light came on flashing with the car going sluggish. It disappeared again and the car ran like sort of normal again but this happened 2-3 times on my way to work.

I called the mechanic who told me it could be the plugs. I had a small shudder before on start up, but then it disappeared after a couple of minutes. I thought they replaced the plugs when they did the head, but the mechanic told me they hadnt, but that the plugges looked old and ready to be swapped out. I dont have the time to be annoyed, as I need to get this fixed. No garage has the time before after christmas and I`m leaving town tonight. I have bought new spark plugs and will change them afterwards.

Is it likely to be the spark plugs? Could it be something else? Its a M62B44- 4.4-engine.

More than likely plugs or oil leak from and incorrectly fitted cover gasket.....oil leaks into the plug well and the spark from the coil tracks to earth and misfires the plug.

Common issue esp. on the BMW's powered by the M62.

Also could be the cats breaking down causing blockages this is again common on Bimmers esp. the E38's

Garage closed until over New year. Diagnosis on sunday. Will have to try and sort it out myself

Btw there was a little bit of Oil on the plugs on the top.

Not in the plug Hole, but on the top of the Hole/top of the plug underneath the White porselen.

If its the valve gasket, what falt code would fit and which gasket is it?

I'm with Don.....

Gaskets 2 and 6. Also they need to put sealant in specific places as well as the gaskets....all in RAVE

As for codes...more often it is misfire codes...the P numbers I think are 03XX or similar...

Take it back to them....

Check the cats too.....usual way on the bimmer was to remove the upstream Lambdas to help the engine breath....and see if she'll rev better, if so, cats could be breaking down and clogging up.

Research this on Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle loads of threads on Bimmer forums about misfires and flashing EML

Ill take a diagnosis tomorrow. The gasket thing needs to be sorted but its not certain its the culprit.

If i take out the plugs and clean them and the plug holes, will the car start like normal if the gaskets are to blame?

Labour in Norway is 120£. And They are booked. The garage is closed. They will not be back until 5th.

My options are to let the car be until at least the 5th and not use it (and propably longer) or try to fix this myself.

I cancelled the payment for the word to the garage until New year so will sort them out later. But need the car.

Hi again,

Have done a diagnosis now. Its misfiring on all cyinders on the one cylinder bank.

P1301 Multiple misfire fault
P0304 Misfire detected cylinder 4
P0303 Misfire cylinder 3
P0302 Misfire Cylinder 2
P0301 Misfire Cylinder 1
P0022 Camshaft control bank 2 sensor

Took out one of the coils to have a look now. This is how the bank looks, with coil of cylinder 1. Keep in mind, this was cleaned out and fixed a week ago. (driven roughly 800km)

Put in new plugs here on friday and have hardly driven it since. The sockey was then dripping with oil.

hmmmm looks questionable!

If the socket was coming up covered in oil, then I would suggest cleaning it, reseal is according to RAVE (as a few beads of silicon has to be applied in a few places) and see if the misfires re-occur!

Should I get new gaskets or can I use these again? They are new. (50£ each in norway)

I will have to go out and by silicon tomorrow (I only have the kind to use for home improvement) so will just take out the plugs and clean the plug holes tonight to see it clean plug holes makes a difference when firing the beast up.

I tried cleaning plugs and plug holes. didnt help a damn thing.

But noticed the car is leaking oil from under the valve cam. Dripping down. So seems the gasket is really not put on right.

Did you clean up the coil stems too??

Try swapping the coils from one bank to the other, if the faults follow the coils then they are all duff (most unlikely).

If there is still misfires, try removing the upstream lambda on the affected bank, if it runs better it could be the exhaust cat is blocked....removing the upstream lambda will allow exhaust gas to escape before the cat making it breath better.

If it continues, I'd suggest looking on Bimmer Forums for similar issues as this is well documented in the Bimmer community....essentially the L322 is an E38, E39 and £53 in disguise!
