why would the light come on very briefly (like 2 seconds) when towing a caravan uphill, it happened twice in a 2.5 hour journey but not when in sports mode. max weight of van 1140kg.

When you say 'Engine Malfunction/Amber' light when that 'comes on' it usually down to to emissions fault, possibly your EGR valve is failing, especially if towing uphill? As it didn't stay in it is probably nothing to worry about in the short term. What year an model do you have (petrol/deisel) Usually forum would ask
you to introduce yourself first before replying on here but thought I would answer anyway. If your car is a 'Facelift' model(2003 onwards) it will b OBD I I compliant and you may be able to read any diagnostic trouble codes from from cars ECU if you have n OBD I I reader. If not then a garage may read them for you(they may charge
you) Depending on your mileage or vehicle you may find some pointers reading through this part of of forum that could cause this an there is a search button as well that should give you some more pointers. As the light went out(after the vehicle had
completed going up a hill towing a caravan) I would suggest it is nothing too serious to be concerned about in the short term.

Yep, saw that after posting...and I'm a trained observer too :-S

Think all remains relevant in my post but please feel free to correct any ignorance or misconceptions I may have posted. The good thing about this site is that you usually don't have to wait long before some 'oracle' chips in with more accurate information :)

It could be that the low pressure fuel pump is struggling to keep up with the demand of sustained full power running, up hill. When was the fuel filter last changed, or the low pressure pump checked for output pressure? The LP pump generally doesn't last much more than 60 to 70K miles. So if it's done more than that, that's the most likely cause of the light.
