having to remove the engine on our 300 tdi disco to do the clutch.have the chance of buying a one ton sealey crane. could any one tell me if this is a safe capacity, as i have a young lad helping me and i do not want to take any risks with his safety. any advice would be very much welcome.

I doubt it would give the required height to take out a disco engine, don't forget the further out the extension is the lower the lifting capacity is too.
 
I did a engine change on my friends disco (has a 2in lift kit) I never would do one with out dropping the gearbox out of the way 1st so I would get a transmission jack and do it on ramps

The engine is a big lump with all the ancilliaries. The heavier duty the crane, the easier it is. Getting the motor coupled back onto the gearbox and the splines lined up can be very fiddly. I tried on my own at first with no success, and needed another 2 pairs of hands to get the engine fully back onto the gearbox, with me beneath the vehicle, and a couple of mates up top............and an engine leveller helps on the crane.

With the jib extended out, they tend to bounce a bit. You dont want any trapped fingers when you are trying to push it home. I used quite an old Clarke 1tonne crane, but it was quite heavy duty, where as some of the newer ones are a bit flimsy...........get the most robust one you can, and a decent jack under the gearbox helps to level things up.

If ya do aniffer one get some threaded bar to fit the bell housing studs and or long bolts with the heads cut off, & screw em into the bottom 3 or 4 stud holes. about 5 or 6 inches is ideal. this will allow you to get it lined up and it'll self level (sort of) to make it easier to slide the shaft into the hole. :eek: :eek: :D
 
I've managed on my own to get engine and box out of 200 tdi.

I've also just recently done clutch on me disco by dropping the 'box, done on my own using a trolley jack, bottle jack and a rat**** strap.

Perhaps not adviseable for young assistants though.
