hi all,
2005 td4 sport auto 94000
last week my alternator packed up and I had a new one fitted. As the old one "died" I heard a loud knocking from deep down in the engine on the near side. It only happened when going about 30mph, I accelerated slightly. It only lasted a second or two then it ran smoothly. The RAC guy who towed me home said it was probably the engine management system getting confused by the lack of power from the knackered alternator.??
Despite the new alternator it is still happening. It only happens now and then lasts for a second then runs normally. When it does rattle it is usually accompanied by a puff of black smoke from the exhaust.(unburnt diesel??)
Apart from this it runs smoothly with no loss of power, no warning lights showing and starts first time .
Any advice from you experts would be appreciated
,PS this is the third time I`ve tried to post this. Hope I`ve done it right this time

DO you hear the knocking noise at tickover, and it disappears with some revs on?

Knocking down that side of the engine is usually the anti vibration damper on the crank pulley. That does not explain the black smoke though.

My alternator is a piece of crap, and only just charges. Might be a factor in my issue!

Mine currently get to 3000 rpm, and them drops to 2500 ish with a puff of black smoke. No engine light. Had the fault code read and that indicated the Crank Position Sensor was fault. Not changed it yet. Wonder if you have a similiar issue.

Get the ECU codes read, that may be the best bet, or at least give you a place to start.
