Engine keeps over heating and blowing the expansion bottle after repairs.

Hello and Good Morning to everyone,
I have a big problem with my landy. I drive a free lander and recently the head gasket went on it. So I replaced it and needless to say a few days later the expansion bottle cracked and steam started to come out of it and all the water had drained out, at first we thought it was no big deal because the bottle was an original as far as we could tell and that the pressure from the gasket going might of blown it, so we replaced that too.
At the same time we noticed a hole in one of the hoses, thinking that these were original is well and judging by how thin a lot of the hoses were on most of them we decided to change them too. so a few days later we were driving along then low and behold we saw steam rising again out of the engine, so we opened the hood and saw no water in the bottle and the temp was though the roof.
A friend of ours said that the manifold might had gone when the gasket went because they are made of plastic and it could of warped. so we replaced that too.
Now yesterday when I got home I noticed steam again coming out of the hood so i had a look and the brand new expansion bottle has got 2 big cracks in it and obviously there is no water in the system.

Having replaced all these items and there is still a problem, do any of you guys have a slight idea what it might be ? maybe a blockage in the radiator or something ? I am at a complete loss, so any ideas little or big would be greatly received.

do freelanders not have a pressure relief valve in the expansion tank cap? you didn't keep using the old cap did you?

Nope with the new bottle there was a new pressure relief cap, which we brougt from a land rover dealership
 
These are a good engine but there are all manner of things to check when changing the head gasket. If they have literally just changed the head gasket without checking why it went in the first place they are incompetent.

Headgaskets dont just go, there has to be a cause for it, things to check on this engine are :-

if there was a hole in the hose, why the hell didnt the garage identify this? if you lose coolant in this engine it can very quickly knacker the gasket.

Could well be that your new gasket is now knackered because of this.

Im a big fan of the K series, its a great engine but does need most things to be right for it to last.

Get on the blower to the garage who did the work and ask what the hells going on (but do it nicely as shouting doesnt resolve anything)
 
yeah, i wouldn't touch it. take it back.

some thoughts. water pump stopped working? stat closed, waterways blocked (can you fit the gasket the wrong way on these?)

either way if it overheated into the red, then the head might be warped.

i don't know freelanders well, so i'm generic guessing.
 
you'd think it wouldn't be able to pressurise :/

edit: oh i just noticed you said it has no water in it!

well i mean we filled the bottle up and let the water run through the hoses everytime, if that was un-clear ?
 
ive had a waterpump on a k series fail before, doesnt seem that uncommon. Theres also the problem with the thermostat getting stuck after people shove k seal ****e in there thinking its going to solve their head gasket woes
 
How much did the garage charge for the headgasket?

was it a proper jobbie? i.e head skim?

Either way I wouldnt drive it, tell them to come get it.

PRT thermostat it is a upgrade for k series cooling system



.....mostly problem comes from the thermostat.
 
also to check out is was there water in the cylinder head if the head has been off I would ask for them to take the jiggle pin out as this has to be opened to allow water into the head and to do this you take the small pipe of the header tank and blow into it and that opens it but as I said if you have to take the head off again take it out.

+1 on the advice you've received so far. You paid good money for them to fix it and they didn't. Their responsible for the quality of their work so should sort it for you.
Having said that if you have put K Seal or similar into the coolant before taking it to the garage then unfortunately you are partly responsible for subsequent issues.
 
while it is running put your hand on the end of the exhaust and see if it is really hot be care full though also you may see steam coming out if this is the case then head gasket problem has not be solved .
