Hi guys, I have a 2004 freelander 12.4 V6 auto (petrol). Yesterday whilst out the engine just died, lost post power slowed then lights on dash lit up and it stopped..... Tried to restart and it tried but wouldn't so got breakdown out he out diagnostics on to it and it showed over fueling on banks 1 & 2 but could not start so towed home. Any ideas ?????? all help appreciated.

When were the timing belts last changed? Were genuine Gates belts fitted along with new water pump and idler pulleys?

Good point, no idea i have only had it 6 months, however breakdown call out said they were fine as first thing he checked. Is the V6 an interference engine? if so had no clattering or knocking/banging noises when it stopped.

How did he check the timing belts? There are 3 on the KV6.

Is the V6 an interference engine?

Most definitely. If a belt fails, the engine will need at least top end rebuild.

The KV6 doesn't generally just stop running, unless some serious mechanical failure occurs.

Stuck his hand down side of engine, maybe it was just the fan belt he checked. could be a big bill then if belts gone................

The covers must be removed to check the timing belts.

Yes indeed. A huge bill, well over £1K, probably closer to £2K, if reputable LR specialist is doing the work.

Is there no record of the belts being changed? They should be changed at 60K miles or 5 year intervals. So it should be on its 3rd set by now.

Had a belt go on a K series mgf before didn't sound or feel similar

The KV6 is a completely different engine compared to the K4 fitted to the MGF. They share only one common component, which are the cylinder liners. Everything else is different.

Can you post a video of it cranking over on YouTube?

I will try and do it tomorrow if I get the chance as working
