By chance a mate has a 4.6 V8 from a Range Rover, I was looking todo some upgrades to my 3.5 V8 on carbs, but it might be better just to swap the whole engine out for a much more powerful unit.
Anyone got a ball-park figure for what i would get charged to-do this???

cheers

lots.

installation and modification of electronics, tuning, different rad..blah blah ....

infact lots and lots..

diy is only option if you have to ask how much it will cost..

holly would be much better..and efi ie gems or thor would be so much better

Sigh, thought it would be a nice drop in and bolt up, nothing wrong with my 3.5 bar would like more power and for it to start easier (running manual choke, but the main pain is when its wet or damp weather, always starts just takes a long time, guess its the issue with running points etc)

you coild make it work on your carbs...

you could just drop it in, but even then you have to swap cam and all of front of engine across...the 4.6 does not have provision for a dizzy..

hense..its not an easy conversion..and if you did above you would lose most of the benifits of the 4.6..hense it would be much better (hp amd mpg) to swap it over with all the electronics..hense cost..

If you where to fit the 4.6 prob best way would fit the engine complete and then megasquirt it but as zen says lots of money if you can't do it yourself

you can make a 4.6 out of both engines,9block heads 4.6, front end 3.5) but you will really need a new cam etc..plus i suggest a holley carb and matching manifold
but, thats running to a grand already..

You need an ignition service using geniune parts. Change the dizzy cap for a geniune one, no less, new rotor arm (geniune) and put some megnecor leads on it with a new quality coil. New plugs, again quality ones and I bet it will start easier.

TO get more power whynot just change the cam for a hot one off the shelf? Good chance to do some top end work while your at it and change the lifters and so on.

Would converting to electronic ignition be better? Any folks done this..

Yes, if your on points still, its a good upgrade. Keep your old dizzy under the seat as a spare. I used a SimonBBC dizzy on my 2.25 with a coil of theirs and it worked great. You can convert your current dizzy with a cheaper kit but still think about fitting decent ign components around that. The old dizzy caps get porous and the oem ones don't fit! Either way, the damp gets in and your screwed.

Hi, I,m the guy with the nitrous set up for sale on eBay.

If the 4.6 is a good engine, I'd want to swap it. Around 220hp 246lbft as standard in a range rover p38

The most expensive bit would be a carb and inlet, but I think su,s could be re jetted.

Put your front cover and ancilliaries on, prime oil pump. Swap sump and oil pickup if necessary though you will open sump seal anyway as it oversails the bottom of the front cover

I'm not sure of... If it was out of a range rover, will your oil pump / distrubutor drive cog bolt straight on to gems cam? If so, leave the heads on your 4.6. No point opening it up, if it ain't broke..... I run my 4.6 on a piper285 with distributor drive.

Electronic ignition is a worthwhile upgrade but don't do it at the same time. Get it running with what you know works.

You may not want to live with it. No choke Point and squirt. It is fun when the secondaries open. It basically wee wees petrol in. Driveability would be compromised on a 3.5 though it would accelerate rapidly between filling stations

Welcome :), what would the kit you have for sale give to my standard 3.5?? 200+??

sorry, but dreaming...(not meaning to put you down..)

its sooooooooo not useable on a shagged 3.5..really for strip use only..(and on a bigger engine, carb way to big for a 3,5)

your best bet is to fit new cam and lifters and a good tune up..
