after noon all. defender td5.
just got a squeal on the belt i think ? but only does it when driving in gear , cant get it to happen in neutral no matter how hard i rev. is this the belt or could it be one of the pullies the slightest acceleration will set it off
any ideas thanks

is it a squeel or chirpy noise, ive got the chirpy noise and i think it's coming from the crank pulley

yeah it more chirpy than squeal. have checked some previous threads and people have said it could be dry alternator bearing or warped exhaust manifold letting gasses out. mine only happens when moving and in gear wont happen in neutral no matter how hard i rev ?

i traced mine to the crank pulley with a stephoscope, happens when i put the gas on and with bonnet up have someone turn the engine off, mines more audiable as it's turned off

dont think it can be same as yours as mine is only when i drive which makes it impossible to listen to different components. looks like a trip to local lr garage see if they have any ideas .

posted this earlier today. only johnlad replied, i guess the rest of you were round the mother in laws . any ideas as this is driving me nuts.

He is a great trick I just picked up from a specialist, sprinkle talk onto the belt I was truly amazed to see this shut the squeak up. He then proceeded to put a penny behind the top pulley thing part that was out of line. Squeak has not returned 
Wd40 or silicone is not a good idea.

He said the squeak is caused by the join in the belt being dragged off square; the talk stops the squeak by absorbing the moisture. Not that im a mechanic or even mechanically minded but i did see it with my own eyes.

I had the same problem only two squeeks one was the cam belt bieng ground down by the front plate "ouch glad i cought that one" the other is a aux belt only happend whilst driving and was the pully at the top of the engine theres a few posts about the penny trick on here wish i had seen them before the bill

The penny trick only works on 300tdi's;)

just been to my local indie lr garage, he got in , 10 yards up the road he diagnosed it as uj on the front prop, that would also account for the slight shudder when i accelerate. quoted about 70quid to replace uj . fair price i thought.
thanks for all your ideas.
