I've just bought a series 2a with a 3.5 v8 engine the electrics look a mess! Where do I start? Is there any manuals etc that will help? There looks like there are plenty of wires that don't do anything so I'm thinking that starting from scratch would be best? Any ideas would be most welcome!

Pics ?

Has extra stuff been added etc ?

Manual in the series book is only good for standard wiring, if someones been adding lights and electric fans poorly then thats just a case of google

It originally had a diesel unit in it so I'm assuming the 3.5v8 it's got now is a different set up? There's plenty of wires with connectors to extend them which don't look good! Wires just hanging not connected to anything so I'm thinking of starting from scratch so that its nice and tidy!

That's not a bad idea, especially as it would have originally been dynamo/control box and would now be alternator. Any original stuff left would probably be rotten and brittle too. Autosparks probably have something off the shelf if you tell them what you've got. A v8 and 2.25 petrol have similar connections so could see if they've got a 2a alternator ready loom maybe.

Photobucket the pics then copy over the IMG codes to your reply

Erm, well if its just carbs and its going to the engine I presume the left over cables would be to the glowplugs.

Should look like this on a V8 as basic wiring

For EFI you'll have a couple more live wires for the ECU, your accessory pin should have stuff like lights and radio IIRC (I've got a different diagram for mine) and then your fuel pump is on pin one which is a constant switched live

This is the one for mine as its EFI

+1 on the 2.25 alternator-modified harness for a IIA. Toook my 109 from a Diesel to a petrol engine long ago and that was part of the job - replacing the harness which was very, very tired. The wiring for a V8 is not dissimilar especially if non-EFI.

Any added devices can then be fitted onto the stock harness, and done neatly.

One thing I recommend to anyone doing things like this is to print a large format copy of the schematic and sketch in the additions you make to the wiring - this will make your life so much easier a few years from now when the accessory blows a fuse and you have to go into diagnostic mode.

An old harness is just not worth fighting with - it is way too infested with Lucas gremlins. OEM smoke for recharging it is just too damn expensive.

So I need a 2.25 alternator-modified harness for a IIA? And where is the best place to get one? Or can you make one yourself?

I'd start by tracing the wires in the engine bay to the end of what they're at

You're on carbs so you should just need a simple set up like the pic I posted, anything excess leading to the engine isn't needed. If you're on electronic dizzy then you'll have one extra wire from the dizzy to the +ve on the coil but that should be it

For the rest of the things the wiring should be fairly basic

Nope, cos mine isn't done yet!

It was but I had to cut it all up to get the wings off fully/easily, essentially theres only a few wires though! One major loom for lights and a second mini loom for the engine on mine

I'm going tho trace the wires and mark them this weekend then try and make a wiring diagram of what I've got! Where do u get your wires from and what do u get for a regular re wire? I'm thinking of using some split plastic conduit to keep it tidy instead of buying a off the shelf wiring harness what do u think? Thanks for the help so far!
