First up my car, 1994 Discovery series 1, 2.5 Turbo Diesel, Manual box.

I have a slight problem - when driving along above 40kmh, My electrics drop out - my tacho and speedo drop down to nothing, my temp guage goes up to hot and my glow plug light and temp light come on, for about 3ms and then go back to normal. I have pulled the dash out, the stereo, UHF, air locker wires, fuse panel, checked all the fusable links and most of the wiring but i cant seen to get anywhere, anybody able to help me please.

Don't know if this helps but the guages on my '96 model went crazy when my alternator fried the battery as it was seriously over charging. Have you checked the battery voltage with a multimeter?

It should not read over about 14 volts at any engine speed. Mine was reading over 17 volts at tickover so god knows what it was giving out at driving speed revs.

Thanks for that Idea, took it to an Auto Electrician, tested fine, 14.4 volts is the highest they could get out of it. Any Other Ideas?

Sorry, I'm no mechanic or auto electrician. It seems bizarre that all these guages and lights are effected as they all get their signals from seperate and individual senders and sensors which is why I suggested a system wide cause (the alternator). Was the auto-electrician able to come up with possible explainations?

All I can suggest is you do a thorough search of the posts on Landyzone, or re-post your problem around 8pm to 10pm when a lot of the members seem to be looking at new posts, having had their dinners!

Good luck.

i bet it's the voltage regulator, did they get it up to anything close to it normal operating temp when testing it? - some faults tend not to appear untill things get hot

Thats a pretty good point i will disconnect the alternator and run it for a few hours to see if its the regulator. Thanks

I would not advise running the alternator with it disconected, this can damage the regulators in some alternators (im no expert on the disco alternator, but running them not connected is bad practice. I would guess at it been a poor earth and the reason you are getting other lights comming on is that something else is trying to earth through these. Im not a disco expert but thats where i would start my search!

Brand New alternator fitted. Speedo is electronic. We think its going to be a bad earth, but we dont know where to start. Any Ideas where to start looking?

I had the same thing happen on my 300TDI last year it turned out to be a bad conection on one of the alternator wires

Im not familiar with the disco electrics, but there must be a common earth somewhere that goes to the dash. if you could find an earth you could try putting a temporary earth wire to this point and see if the fault dissapears.

Pulled out the dash and found one of the earth wires to have positive volts in it. But it hasnt fixed the problem.

Guys and Girls, Problem Fixed...... It was the earth coming off the battery and onto the body, the earth on the chassis was fine. Because of the lift kit it was trying to earth through the springs and causing my problem. Thanks to all that helped with it. If anyone else has this problem feel free to contact me and i will discuss it with you.
