Hi,

My 64 S2A has been worknig great for over 2 years now until today. I lost all my headlights and tail lights!!!
Checked fuses, headlight switch, floor mounted dimmer switch, all checked ok.

However here is what I found out.

12volt at light switch, 12v at dimmer switch but when I plugged in the lead to the dimmer switch the voltage dropped to about 1.4 v !

I then ( for trouble shooting only) ran a wire from battery (+) to headlight switch, 12 v showing at dimmer switch main lead and once plugged in, headlights came on and reading 12 v.

However impossible to gat the wing position lights or/and tail lights to work .

Can someone tell me if there is any connection between the voltage regulator box to the lights wiring?

I have the Lucas C40 type regulator and I cannot for the life of me make sense of the readings I am getting from A and A1.
Like I said it was working just fine and then suddenly stopped working.

Thank you very much.

:)

Great introduction

Tis the middle o the night here and unlike you I have a circuit diagram somewhere that if I int too busy I may find a link too later.

Then again

Why not :googleit:

:welcome2:

Thanks for your reply.

I have used Google to search for wiring diagram but all the diagrams I have found are missing the A and A1 connectors info, it is just showing 2 lines going nowhere !?!.

I am afraid that over the years a lot of owners have done their own modifications to the electrical system and that it will take me forever to figure out what is going on in there.

If there is a short somewhere, it must be less than 20 amps , as none of the 2 fuses have melted.

I have a had time following the wiring from the position lights to the dashboard. I cannot tell if something is connected to the regulator or not .

Thanks again.

Cheers.

Download the workshop manuals from pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com

It won't be a short it will be an open circuit. Have you got a multimeter and do you know roughly how to use one?

By wing position lights do you mean flashers or side lights?

Things to try:

Try spinning the fuses round in their holders and try taking them out and clean the holders up with WD40 and emery.

With fuses in place try bridging each with wire briefly and see if they flash on

With a multimeter on Vdc range (not V~) clip one lead to a good chassis earth and test both sides of each fuse then try at each point from the fuse up to the switch.

I bet its a dirty fuse contact. I have to spin mine round every now and again to get the indicators to run at correct speed. I have an old bus with 30 odd of the buggers in it, you can imagine how much fun that can be....

Check for a voltage at the actual lamp might be bad earth preventing the lamp illuminating very common problem.
Make sure the other test lead is connected to battery earth post.

Thanks guys,

It is going slow. I haven't found the problem yet but discovered some new ones :scratching_chin:

I have checked the fuses with a voltmeter, all good, I even wired a + lead from the battery to power the positions lights (small ones on wings, not turning lights or main headlights). Still no luck. I suspect like BlackBurn suggested that it is a grounding issue. I will try to troubleshoot some more tomorrow.

:)

Well, I gave up!!!

I am re-wiring the whole car. Gonna take forever but seems to be the right thing to do considering the mess that this has become over the years.

The car has an alternator with built in regulator, solenoid, and the system will be negative ground.

I googled basic wiring diagram but if someone has some input as to how to wire the factory regulator ( don't know if I need it or not).

Thanks

Series are **** easy to rewire - theres only a dozen or so wires in it. Make sure you stick to original size and colour coded wires. Add extras at the same time.

Oh and fit a decent fuse/relay box whilst yu are at it.

Ok, thanks for the advise. Seems like that fuse box has been the source of a lot of problems for many owners over the years.;)

Should I keep that regulator box ?
