am I missing something here i have just fitted a egr bypass valve one i got off ebay. And i am wondering if i could have saved myself £30, the valve was all gunged up but looking at it i was thinking that i could have cleaned it up and just blocked the exhaust bit up with silicone :doh: is there some reason that i could not do this I hope there is now that i have spent£30 on a bypass. no doubt you experts will let me know why i could not just block it up with silicone:

No, you have not wasted your cash.
Some folks have tried to do a DIY modification of the EGR valve.
But..... Simply blocking the activating vacuum pipe is not enough as there is the original gubbins still inside the tube reducing the effective diameter and thus the amount of air-flow.
Some folks have tried putting a disc or even a coin in the exhaust feed tube to the EGR, but it burns through in a fairly short time.
You might also want to replace the EGR at some point in the future perhaps even temporarily if the MOT rules were to change to our disadvantage.
No mistake mate.
Have you checked out and done the mod for the dying duck sound effect that comes as a result of the EGR by-pass? A very simple mod - get back to us if you can't find the thread.

as a past plumbing and heating fitter i have used tons of silicone in far hotter situations.I have stuck basins back with it that would pull the wall down before it would come of first. there is some silicone called dunbrick that is specifically for very hot flues that would have done the job. if I had known that all you are technically doing is blocking the exhaust off I would have used silicone instead of spending £30

Hi Tezzer, i am just about to post my thoughts on this, i've just cleaned out my EGR valve on my 156k mile td4 auto, and removed my Synergy 2, it is certainly cleaner running with less smoke and pickup is better. IMO would leave it on and clean it out every now and then, maybe i'm missing out!

I have the EGR mod on my TD4. I can't find anything on the "dying duck sound effect" would this mod be refering to the whistling sound I have, that I assumed is just turbo whistle.

It's the strange sound that it's often possible to hear after you switch the engine off.
Search for duck sounds and you'll get a few threads regards the EGR valve and the most effective way to blank off the little vacuum pipe.

I have the dying duck sound when turning off the engine,new to the Freelander1 td4 hade Landy110 11seater and Disco1 td5.
So this is new to me and still learning , egr valve already been done on Freeby when I got her and so not sure where to be LOOKING for the vacuum leak and how to solve this acoustic sound.
Love this site for all its knowledge and informative responses.

vac.pipe needs blocking prior to feeding the solenoid [ v.pump side ]

Sorry hd3 you've lost me. You've got the egr blank fitted with a big hose coming of that, another hose/pipe which has been blanked and a little pipe which I've blocked. I've looked at your diagrams and I'm not seeing it the way others are. What am I meant to be blocking/blanking. Sorry for being a thicko

I removed the solenoid completely once I realised it was causing the weird noise after turning the engine off. Took quite a while to figure out what it was and until I read this I'd never heard of it being called the duck noise. Good name for it BTW, I just thought the solenoid was faulty.

The pipe goes from the EGR to the solenoid. When you fit the EGR blank the solenoid is still trying to suck the EGR open but can't cause you blanked it so it huffs and makes the duck noise. If you disconnect the other hose which goes to the solenoid from the vac reservoir (weird round thing on the right of the engine) and block it then the solenoid won't have any vac to be noisy.Sorry hd3 you've lost me. BTW if you get it wrong you'll have almost no brakes so be careful.
