EGR pipe is a goner

Drove from home to Stoke last night to pick up an old vw bug to restore.

On the way down i was curious that the MPG never got better than 23.1 which made we wonder what was wrong, as i normally get better than that on combined,and this was a motorway run, cruise set at 70, no traffic.

Got down there and topped up,£70 for 250miles....mmmmmm
Opened the bonnet to have a look and..........

Ferkin' EGR pipe has broken at the bellmouth fitting under the plate, and spewed soot all over me nice engine

That is not a Range rover M51 either. Has it had an engine change?

Yessir ,remember the gauge sensor debacle, when we realised it had had an engine change at some point . Think it's from an omega maybe.
Looking along it's length it has a tang for a bracket about halfway but no bracket so i think vibration has played a part.
Thing is where to get another?
Look familiar to anyone?

Well spotted Tony, M51 in the P38 has a plastic manifold with the EGR, reckon that's Omega

TBH the pipe and bellmouth are pretty thin and flimsy but i think it would have lasted a lot longer if the bracket had been fitted in the middle.
Bugger , need to look for a new one i suppose.

To do it properly remove pipe find a correct blanking nut on manifold and blank of egr or buy a egr blanking kit

Or fit the Allisport one which looks identical to the original. The pipe stays in place but doesn't go anywhere. No one is any the wiser.

I have got one fitted. Bit pricey but well made.

How would blanking egr fail MOT? thought it only affects NOX reading which isnt part of the mot and was just on it for the american market? :s

Thinking about it, if you have got a hole in the pipe you will still need a penny at the other end.

Think i will need to make a blanking plate for inlet man where pipe fits and same for exhaust man ,remove pipe for now and see how she runs.
Dunno if it will bring a light on but cant be worse on fuel than it is right now.

It possibly won't if you just blank it. But if it has been removed or a none standard bypass fitted it will fail if the EU gets it's way in 2014. Lots of stuff still up in the air yet. But apparently all the European directive on MOT tests have to be in force by then.
