I have not done a lot of research on the synergy, but basically, doesn't it just supply more fuel at the right time, therefore using more fuel?

Or have I totally misunderstood what it does?

it alters the fuel timings so that the engine runs better on our grade of fuel,manufacturers alter the engine characteristics so that there cars will run on low grade fuel that is only available in certain country's.:)
 
In simple terms it does put more fuel in which makes no sense for saving fuel! But its how you drive it that counts. You have much more low down torque which means you can pull the taller gears at lower revs which means you're putting less squirts in per minute even tho they're slightly larger squirts it equates to less fuel overall! That make sense?
 
Even on the lowest setting (6 for the Pierburg MAF) and the in cab switch on green (economy) considerable improvement with power and acceleration is obvious with the Synergy 2a, once again if you use this improvement fuel consumption can suffer. I used to get 30 mpg before I fitted the bypass and the Synergy, I still get 30 mpg but boy does it fly :)
 
Before I did the epg mod, I used to get somewhere around 40 / 42 on a long run with a 2 ltr TD4 2006 plate which has only done around 35K.

I've settled down with my Synergy2a+ after about a year of using it.

I find it's an either / or situation.

With the cabin switch set to 'ECO' which I use mainly for motorways and dual-carriageways I can get about 43/44mpg - that's 4 or 5 mpg more than before on long journeys cruising at the legal max speed in the UK.

Set to the 'power' setting I get what I used to get before - but with added 'fun' and 'sportiness', mainly on A and B roads.

To buy a Synergy just for extra economy would take quite a while to get back the investment, depending of course on your annual mileage.

I love it - beacause it's made the car much more enjoyable and pleasant to drive.

Much safer too - as overtaking is now quicker and shorter.

it is easy,ten mins tops to fit,unless you get the dash switch,then a bit longer.

Dash switch is easy - you just need a suitable hole to feed the cable through the bulkhead.

On an auto you just use the rubber grommet where the clutch pedal isn't.

I fixed it to the dash using double-sided sticky pads and it hasn't fallen off - yet.

It does more than just switch it on / off - you can select Power, Economy, or off.

Mine is never off. :D

If you go for the new MAF the security bits that you need are also included, obviously means fitting the Synergy takes longer but well worth it in my opinion. Don't forget that fitting the Synergy is classed as a modification and your insurer should be informed which could result in an increase to your premium.
 
Managed to get round to fitting EGR bypass to my 04 Td4 Premium Sport auto just before Xmas. The day after fitting, drove 900 miles to spend Xmas with the girlfriend's family in Czech Republic.

Wow, what a difference !! Throttle response is much better, pick-up from standstill is greatly improved & no more exhaust smoke when hitting full throttle. Fuel economy is also improved. Not surprising considering the amount of crud in my EGR valve.

I went for the Britpart DA1087FL unit, as it came with silicon hoses - my OE rubber ones were soft from oil & crud.
