Hi there,
I'm new to Disco ownership and have noticed on forums and on various internet sales sites talk of EGR suppression kits! I assume EGR is the exhaust gas recycling system. What benefit does removing this have and what effect does this have on emissions? Is it really worth doing?

Really is a simple mod to do.

I got the kit of ebay for £25. Only took half hour to fit. And gives a little more power and mpg.

One thing to do aswel, whilst you have it to pieces take the intercooler out and give it a clean with parafin. Years of exhaust gases going through it is bound to have left it a bit manky in there.
 
Standby for the bolts snapping when you try to undo them. Its a 30 minute job if all goes well. Takes quite a bit longer if you have to get the drill out.
 
Just fitted a EGR Blanking plate and gasket to our 02 Td5, probably the best £6.50 ill ever spend on the Discovery. Its always frustrated me the way it drove around town and in traffic compared to open road driving. The Power is now delivered much more smoothly, controlled and with better response.
 
I prefer to remove the valve totally and replace with a new blank valve body and gasket. Then remove the pipe work to and from the heat exchanger, blank off the H/E to keep it clean, then fit the plate on the manifold outlet.

Just unplug the actuator(s) and then seal up the two vacuum hoses and tie wrap out the way.

Pretty easy really, I was surprised at how clean my intake manifold was with the EGR fitted though on my TD5.
 
I thought about the pros and cons of removing the EGR vale completely or just simply blanking and came to the conclution that the thing thats giving the negative effect on the performance of the engine was the exhaust gas its self so simply blanking off was the most cost effective way forward. If we were talking about a high performance vehicle where the weight saving was an added bonus i could see advantage of performing a complete EGR delete. If in a few years time the exhaust emissions are reviewed and raised it could be a problem if completely deleted.

Or if they ever change the MOT to include the presence of an EGR if originally fitted.
