I'm at my wit's end.

Disco 300 tdi had a bit of welding done and my mechanic pal who did it had to drop the fuel tank out.

After it was welded and tank refitted I blanked the egr. I'd done a full service before the welding so new filters and oil all round.

After blanking it was running so weakly, and spewing so much white smoke that I thought it must be sucking air from somewhere.

I've checked the top of the fuel tank for air, as well as all of the fuel lines.

It's had replacement lift pump, new injectors, new belt, and pump timing has been done.

Coolant was low but no mayonnaise, so don't think it's head gasket.

Any suggestions ?

Cheers

You could have disturbed some crud in the fuel tank when it was removed, clean the sedimenter, change the fuel filter and see if that helps.
At least this is a cheap and easy place to start.

If the cambelt was done at the same time as the other work check that the timing hasn't moved.

White smoke and power loss are normally caused by either air ingress or pump timing, a blockage in the fuel system can cause timing issues with the pump, so can air in the system.

try replacing the fuel lines for clear ones, you'll see bubbles in the line if it's pulling air in.

It was the fuel pump timing all along...

The geniuses at Kirbymoorside Land Rovers spotted it very soon after I took it to them in exasperation.

Thanks for the help.

At least it's running properly now.

Pump timing is a nice easy job and should have been an hour or so work in a garage.

Sounds like the belt was changed without setting the pump timing.

Was it a garage that done the belt change ?
