Hi
I don't understand about the 'drivers' do I need to download something else.
I thought I only needed to download the EAS software......I think a got a disc when I bought my first lead so maybe everything was on the disc that was required.
So do I need to download the 'driver' software?

Your USB to serial adaptor should have come with a CD containing the driver which has to be installed on your computer BEFORE the adaptor is plugged in. If there was no CD, there should have been some paperwork with a link to down load the correct driver.
If you have plugged the adaptor in without loading the driver first, it gets complicated as the Windows driver has to be disabled.
Which version of Windows are you using?

Best to uninstall the USB adapter SOFTWARE, then re-install BEFORE inserting the USB adapter next time.

The "drivers" are software within the EAS software AND the USB adapter software. Unless they are installed correctly, in this case BEFORE inserting the USB adapter, you'll end up with the problem you've (inadvertently) caused yourself. Easily resolved by steps I mentioned in my previous post. Some guys on here fall into the trap of assuming that we "mere mortals" have more IT "nous" than we actually have...if that makes sense...

I supply a serial to OBD lead, not the not the USB to serial adaptor, the driver would have come with the adaptor from wherever you bought that.

Not only will the USB adaptor software need to be uninstalled, but the windows generic driver will need to be disabled.
As it's windows 10, I cannot help with that, I have never seen Win 10 but I know there are a lot of differences to earlier versions of Win.

If you're talking about the serial-to-USB adaptor, that will (surely) have come with the software to "drive" it. When I had my own company, we needed to provide a serial to USB adapter and we only found ONE that worked successfully every time. We got it from Farnell and it came with a CR-rom with the necessary software (drivers). First time I used it on my laptop, it failed to work. It transpired that I plugged in the USB adapter BEFORE I loaded the software....sound familiar?

There are different chips used in USB to serial adaptors and they require different drivers.

Most of the USB to serial adaptors only support the X-ON/X-OFF protocol, the EAS software requires RTS/CTS protocol which uses extra connections.

Help me here Datatek sometime ago you and Wammers were on a thread talking about certain types of serial adapter to some one and which to use. Can't offhand remember the number you advised people to use but anyway I purchased the said one and it works on 2 old laptops I have. One runs windows 7 and the other XP. I use the same cable and adapter on both and they both work fine. Just thought no harm in letting him have a copy to try. Do agree though did install drivers before plugging adapter in either laptop

FTDI is one and Prolific is the other, either will work if they have been fully wired to provide RTS, CTS & DSR signals.
Sadly most of the adaptors using the Prolific chip do not have the RTS, CTS & DSR signals wired up, so the FTDI is a better bet as most of the adaptors are fully wired, but not all.

Hi.....Decided to manually inflate my system.....turned out I still had some leaks so been sorting new piping.
I thank you all for your help, but its all double dutch to me. I seem to remember having 'Vehicle Explorer' from Blackbox Solutions' would this have been the driver software. I don't think this works with Windows 10, from reading threads from the forum.

Cheers Datatek, reading this right the adapter has every pin coupled to contact to every wire etc to pick up all info and no blanks in as it were ( I can visualize it easier this way). I must be lucky and have one of the correct adapters.
