Hi Gents,

I have looked at the thread on upgrading the EAS pump but having just had the recon pump I bough 2 1/2 years and less than 8k miles ago have the seal go (its the third pump in 8 years) I would like to know has anyone found a reasonably priced alternative compressor that works or has anyone fitted a "tyre inflator" type compressor out of one of the 4x4 mags adverts.
I know that there are alternatives in the U.S. but they seem a bit pricey

I think that you're problem will be finding another pump that will provide the 150psi that you need. Surely a new seal and cylinder would be a better idea. After all do you even know if your recon pump had a new cylinder fitted or could it just have had a new piston seal?

Sounds like your compressor is feeding leaks.:)
 
I have a brand new eas pump for £90 if your interested, it's the genuine rover fitted one, not the cheapo one with the yellow sticker.
P.m if your interested, recon pumps don't last very long unfortunately, that's why. You are better forking out for New one
 
Hi Gents, She doesn't have a leak as she doesn't drop noticably even when left for days on end, she isn't used full time so can stand for a week or more without use and without dropping. Just cleared the air supply fault with RSW software and low and behold she rose from the M/W height that she had dropped to (on the run when the fault locked out) in 2 mins tops. I sometimes think that on realy cold adays the seal stiffens up and leaks back air.

The capacity of the original factory compressor is perfectly adequate.

The only reason for fitting an uprated compressor is if you fit the uprated Arnott Gen III airbags to give higher lift. The uprated airbags consume more air and empty the tank quicker. They are made in the US and are more popular there. That is why US forums talk about uprated compressors more.

Not all seals are the same. I have had a seal fail after just 18 months. The latest one I have got is from symlisa on Ebay. Seems OK. Not a big job to change a seal yourself.

It is well worth fitting a pressure gauge and schrader valve connection. I always take a portable air compressor with me. Once you have to drive on the bump stops you don't forget.
 
Hi Dave, I have changed seals and rebuilt compressors on mine and others a number of times - fitted the recon last time cos I was fed up with iffy seals, and on one occasion the retainer ring letting go after the rebuld and chewing the bore.
I wondered if a later compressor from a third gen RR or D2 was longer lasting with more robust seals etc... but it appars that no one had tried one to see
 
My p38 is 13 years old now (132K) and is on its 3rd compressor (or 2nd rebuild).
Original lasted about 8 years then I put in a Dutch sourced seal. I also changed the cylinder at the time as it was slightly scoured. It lasted about 18 months. The seal had gone hard and there was a visible gap around it. The one in now (the symlisa one) has been in over 3 years and is OK. I have a pressure gauge on the car to see what is going on.

The later compressors are very expensive from what I can see. Also they do not fit in the EAS box.

It is a good idea to have a spare compressor. I have picked up a few dirt cheap on Ebay, put a new seal in and tested them on the bench.

well volunteered for that job let us know how you get on :D,try one from an l322 as that has air on all corners where as the disco 2 has air only on the rear.
 
If the main reservoir was leaking it wouldn't drop (I don't think?) but on startup the compressor would take a long while to pump it back up to 130 psi or whatever. That extra work could speed up the demise of the compressor.
