can any one shed some light on my issue,have just tried to phone dvla but there closed, i wanted to fit some side windows to my defender 90 1992 but was told by a friend if your log book said light goods(which it bloody does)that i couldn't do it unless i payed tax

dont no what to do now,want to just fit them and blag it if i come to sell it in the future but then he also said my insurence may be effected? any one else having these issues and what you done? paul

not true, you can put side windows in to look like a CSW if that is what you are after. But will still be a light goods vehicle, on your registration. If you are trying to do the London air thing it is a bitch to get done. Won't affect your insurance, Ask Jordan or Ed.

CSW = County Station Wagon, basically a Land Rover with seats and windows in the back. As has been said you can have windows and not seats so doesn't really change things that much. On the other hand it could be argued your vehicle is more vulnerable and/or more desirable so it's worth telling the insurance just in case.

I don't understand where 'paying tax on it' comes in to it though. You pay road tax to your local council and emissions duty to the DVLA, neither of these are effected by putting windows in.

It would be wise to inform the DVLA (closed until Tuesday) since the use of the vehicle may have changed depending on how they class it.

CSW glass in side panels, with seats in the back. Vin # will say that. A Hard top (no side glass or seats) will also say that with vin #

London air quailty thing basically if you got a hard top Defender you can not drive in london , and face a 100 quid day fine.

So lots of peeps are cloning hard tops to look like CSW, and peeps are getting tickets. A search for London air quality regs will answer it better

thanks dan it has got private/light goods so im just going to go for it. im going to put one side in tonight,as for the seat thing i have got benches in the back as well,i bet thats wrong to lol

Interesting.

When I fitted side windows I had my current insurance company tell me that i could no longer be insured with them as it was "an excessive modification".

With others adding quite a bit to have it with side windows. Ridiculous considering its the same as others right off production line

How long ago things/rules do change. But Ed and Jordan from fluk said insurance is interested in Power/performance mods as in tuner kits to go faster. Not 4x4 mods

Last September (insurance due in a few weeks :O)

Flux who I'm with at mo are charging me a little extra i believe, would be interesting if they are saying they don't charge extra

Well I guess it's how they view it, it's gone from being a farmers work horse to potentially having 4 more passengers and spending a lot more time on the road instead of driving round a field looking at cows. Their computer tells them vehicles with more than one person inside on the roads is more of a risk than 2 people in a muddy field so they charge you more.

(this was only windows, not seats)

They don't see it that way though, one without windows has 3 seats, one with windows has 7 seats. If they have an opportunity to charge more money they will.

well iv done one side and doing the other side this morning,ill just see what happens next year when mot is due and i go to renue the insurence

If you don't put seats in the back, and the only thing you did was add windows for a safety feature, eliminating blind spots for safer driving I would not say a thing. It will still pass MOT so what is the problem. No different than putting different shocks, or larger tyres and rims on, or if you put better brakes , calibers,rotors on it
