Dump valve

Bit late with a comment here, but don't want to sound stupid or anything.... don't all turbo engines (including diesels) have some form of waste gate/ dump value ? Otherwise you get major back pressure where the engine isn't accepting so much air that the turbo is producing so for a short period of time whilst pressure decreases you get "blow back" where you get a classic "wobb wobb wobb" sound as the pressurized air is forced back through the turbo.

Is this correct or does it work differently for such low rpm engines such as our landys lumps. I know some large american diesels produce turbo blow back because they don't have waste gates fitted.

See from what I understood fitting a dump valve was simply replacing the original stock component with an aftermarket one that has funny holes cut in it to produce a whistling noise as it depressurizes.

Is what I have just said utter poo or have I been informed correctly??

Waste gates bypass exhaust gas on the exhaust (drive) side of the turbo while dump valves dump the compressed air to atmosphere on compressor side of turbo - think that's right. Not all turbos have the dump valve - tends to be only the high pressure performance units.
 
There's a kid round my way with a little tin can of a car, lowered, spoilers etc and he's got one of those pretend dump valve things that just makes a noise like a real dump valve.
The annoying thing is he doesn't drive the car very hard, only revs to about 3k between gear changes so all we hear is burr posh burr posh burr posh, I'd love to stick his pretend dump valve right up his nose. :eek:
 
Yeah, I had a young lad working beside me a few years ago that had got himself a dump valve too. That's all you got out of him for ages "Did you hear ma dump valve?" I just kept telling him that it sounded like his car was fookered.
 
Although not the greatest of ideas, the guy wants to do it. So why can no one help him.
The roller switch will work mate. Depending on the dump valve system it either needs to be a positive or earth feed. Look up a guy called the derv doctor. He will help you

WTF are you on about you knut……….


this threads long dead, long gone and no one can help him because no ones been stupid enough to fit one to a tractor engine
