Hello. Pal of mine has busted his 3 speed ZF auto box on his 3.5. Do I need to look for a ZF or are there other boxes that might fit please. I have an lt77 manual. Wondered if it’s to much problem to fit this box.
Thanks

If you do fit another ZF be aware that the torque converter MUST be fitted to the gearbox & correctly seated before fitting to the engine. If it isn't you'll break the pump in the box & have to take it all off again.
If the box has failed you need to replace the torque converter as well & either replace or thoroughly clean the gearbox cooler or you'll just pump cr8p into the new box.

If it's a 3 speed Borg Warner it's a Model 35. But they were never used on the Range Rover. Although were used on Rover V8's.

The Chrysler A727 Torqueflyte 3-speed auto with the LT230R transfer box was used on the RRC V8 from 1982 until replaced by the ZF 4HP22 in Oct 1985 for the MY 1986 VIN CA onwards.
Mine's a 'C' reg V8 (registered May '86) & has the ZF.

@Terry O Sullivan - off topic.......
Just to let you know the V8 efi from your Disco is lovely :D Do you know it's mileage and whether it's been refurbished? It is very smooth and lusty for an old 3.5!
Not back on the road yet as the chassis was rather lacy in places so getting all the repair and welding jobs done now rather than later.
Good luck

Spot on … I had one of the original ZF equipped Vouges, reg. in Oct '85 & also on a C reg. It had an unbelievable 15 previous owners & starship mileage but sadly both the 'box & engine expired after I'd run it for around year whilst the shell & the interior were both still good. I wanted to have the poor thing restored but the labour costs alone made the project unviable, but I felt sorry for it, how bloody sad is that :(:(

Ah. I have wondered about that. Yea the engines a corker. Went like stink. I sold the gearbox soon afterwards and that chap was local. He was very pleased as well. Ill check the mileage. I still have the truck stripped in the shed.I can check the mileage. What other info were you after?? I removed the wings as they were good and she was a 3 door. I got £300 for them. woop!

I wasworried about breaking her but when i got stuck into it, therot in and around the roof was beyond even my welding.

Shame, at least her 'heart' lives on!

If I'd known I'd taken the whole lot off you as one of the biggest issues was missing little bits and pieces, brackets for afm, air box, pipework, hoses etc. cobbling together an exhaust system (your Disco twin manifolds, RRC downpipes, TD mid and back box) plus bits for the auto box, hi-lo/diff etc. Had a dash rewire as it was bodged to hell, replacement brake pipes all round, new footwells and then found some bad chassis rot, which has been very well repaired now. As the MoT ran out they are also doing anything that's needed to pass (some bushes and a wheel bearing), so all in all its been a bit of a saga.:rolleyes:

Just interested in the mileage for the record, and if you know whether it's been refurbished at some time as it's very sweet :D
Best wishes and thanks ;)
