:confused: Good Morning,
I will need to Fit Dual Batteries, sooner rather than later. (Winch, Lights).
Do I need to fit 2 or do I get 1 with a longer reserve life.
If I fit two does one have to a special type (deep cycle whatever that means) or are they both Heavy truck batteries. or do I need to get those RED & YELLOW Types.:blabla::blabla::blabla:
 
Hi there,

From an ideal perspective you need the second battery to be a deep cycle item. This means that it can be consistently discharged and recharged without incurring damage.

Alternatively you can have a second battery which is a heavy duty item and that should suffice as well. However I am only just looking into this myself so can not offer advice from personal experience other than the leisure boat industry.

After all the only use the second battery will get is lighting and winch so in the short term another standard battery should be ok.

i have been looking into this for a long time
i would say if you intend to do lots of night time winching then go
for the twin batt sys
numax are good
but if like me you may occasionaly use the sys to its full go for a numax 1000 amp
 
Two battries Then, thanks for the advice Greenhornet & Drewster.
I am Novice, how does a Marine battery differ from a heavy duty one, and does the split charge make one a deep cycle one.

Marine batteries don't really differ it is just that the dual set up is different. I haven't wired up a dual battery system on a disco but plan to fit a deep cycle battery, along with a twin alternator setup using brackets from Gwynn Lewis.

Make sure you use the correct size wiring and proper fuses along with attention to detail when wiring accessories. I have seen what dodgy and botched installations do and it normally ends in melted wires and ashes :D

Plan, prep and install. Simples.
 
Hi have dual battery setup with own design/made split charge system using a hd car battery and this powers my winch spots (6 x) cb and also back up to main battery if needed and never had any problems with using this set up always seems to be ready power when needed also this all charges from a single altenator

I too like Darren40040, Have winch,6 spots, CB and heater blower. So Two battries it is then with a spliter, as for the installation Best let someone who knows whats,What And by the tone of all my questions todate that ain`t ME,

Would recommend twin alternators over expensive batteries.

I use 2x Halfords 072 battery and they do just fine.

When I am winching with headlamps and 6x roof lamps on, the alt cannot keep up and voltage drop to around 11.5 volts. Could do with twin alt ideally but Glyn doesn't make for 3.5 v8 :(

I run twin lorry batteries connected together with 75mm2 tri-rated cable via twin winch solenoids. When the solenoids are switched off the two batteries are connected together and charge/ start and run everything as one very large battery, when i require to use the winch i switch the solenoids which put the batteries in series giving me 24v for my winch. My inverter is conected to the second battery as is any overnight/camping equiptment i use, A battery isolator disconnects the two batteries for when camping ensuring i have a spare battery to start in the morning.
 
Hi Top Cat i have to chance of a 24v winch for my disco but was wondering how i could wire it. do you have any photos or diagrams for your set up would be intrested to see how it works and possiably try it myself

I have a red top for starting for the car this then go's to a Tmax split charge, this then is atached to a numax 1000 aux battery fore lights, winch and an inverter attached to them is a volt meater...,So I can see what is happening. Very simple to set up and keep an eye on what is happening.

Pretty much the same as me, I use an Optima red top for starting, then I got a NUMAX 1000CCA Deep cycle battery for the winch, this puts out a lot of power for an extended time, I have done 3 continues winches at full length and still used it a good 5-6 times during the rest of the day and it didn't feel like it was getting low at all...

As for split charging it depends how you want to do it, I use a 120amp relay switched on an ignition live, this simply goes from +ve to +ve terminal and so when the engines running it will charge both batteries, simple and reliable system...
 
i use 2 numax 110ah 1000cca batterys and a tmaxx split charge system works fine for me..

vinnie if you want it all wired up give me a shout my mates a sparky and he has the tools to fit the big battery crimp ends to the cables take a look at mine sometime if ya like
