Just stripping and rebuilding the drum brakes. Took plenty of pics before disassembling but have a query regarding the forked adjuster bar. The forked end with the longer fork and shorter fork...which way around should it go? Does the long fork go on the front or on the back?

Also regarding the toothed part. I thought that both the adjuster bars were the same at both sides but now I'm not sure as the teeth on that part seem different. Are the adjuster bars side specific as I've muddled them up!

Sorry about bringing up this topic as it's been done a billion times. Believe me I've searched for the answer but the closest thread I found had a rather crypic response that didn't really help

The adjusters are handed and MUST go back into the correct side. They are mirror images of each other, with different handed threads. The adjuster wheel teeth are angled so the little triangular lever catches in the theeth and turns it. Every time the handbrake is used, the adjuster could potentially be rotated one tooth. The triangular lever moves in a DOWNWARD direction. In reality, this only happens when there's enough wear on the shoes, for the adjuster wheel to turn one tooth.

I've taken detail pictures of the rear brakes, on a lower miles FL1, before they were stripped.

Here's the adjuster.

I put the long fork on the outside. I do this to help retain the shoes, flat against the backplate, should a retainer fail. I don't know if that is correct, as I've seen them fitted both ways over the years. I just applied some logic to this puzzle some years back.

and if you look closely on the second picture you can see the hole in the back plate where you can shove a flat blade screw driver through and adjust it when the drum is back on

As I have the memory of yer average goldfish I always work on one side only so I have the other side to double check things. Always good though to have help and advice here though as a few folk have had problems caused by the previous owner putting them back together wrong.
