changed the vacuum solenoid actuator for the variable nozzle turbo,fitted new maf ,and changed the depression filter under the top cover,new air filter still loses power when booted
 
check all your turbo and intercooler hoses for splits, especially the small elbow pipe on the turbo, these are prone to collapsing causing the engine to starve of air, dont just look at them but take them off and look inside
 
If you disconnect the VNT actuator on the side ot the turbo,does the linkage move nice and free,they are prone to falling apart inside and jamming or being "crunchy" in operation.If the engine Ecu cant stop an overboost situation it will cut fuelling - no power.
 
do you mean the two thick rubber hoses on the front of the engine,i replaced both last year.but could they have gone again or is there anymore i should check.
 
Raffles I had the same prob that started six months or so ago. Changed all the same things as you but in the end it turned out to be a blocked CAT. Easy to check - all i did was to disconnect the exhaust at the first flex coupling and took it for a spin. The power improvement was unbelievable. This is after it had been to LR dealer (who said there was nothing wrong with it) and to a local "specialist" (who said i needed a new turbo at £800). Now completely lost faith in LR and have got rid of it. Six months of woe that I hope never to repeat.
It was a 2003 TD4

how do you unblock a cat then?
 
I unblocked Tiny's cat by RoverRon's method of whacking a great big chisel down it. Once you take a look at the internals of a cat its amazing how ANYTHING gets through them! This is a mod I stongly recomend on a diesel as the difference to performance with a gutted cat is quite astonishing. Its a 10 mins job and the power improvement is noticable straight away. Kill 2 birds with one stone and just smash the living daylights out of the cat anyway..Lol :D
 
Officially you go to your nearest exhaust center and buy a new one or in reality you find a steel bar about 2 feet long and a lump hammer.

Another whorthwile mod is to replace the egr valve with a straight through pipe. (TD5 owners have already found this out!)

This chap is making them for us 75/ZT/BMW owners and it releases upto 10bhp if you have a decat as well. (Plus a Tu3 or Synergy)

I'm just waiting for some pics, but the prototype he sent is a 5min bolt on job.

how would a tu3 work if as landrover reckon the turbos faulty,,would it help or hinder???

The cat has no effect on the MOT smoke test and little effect on emission. Its really only fitted to get rid of the old diesel exhaust smell.

However, modern low sulphur fuels do not produce much smell with current efficient diesel engines and my 75 barely smells any worse.

Euro 4 (2006/7) vehicles will need to keep the cat as most have lambda sensors and the mot tests the emissions with a probe in the tail pipe (as per petrol engines) rather than for smoke.

I can't see the turbo being faulty. They either work or they don't. If it was damaged and ineffecient you'd get black smoke due to lack of air and you'd notice a loss of torque from under 2000rpm.

If this isn't happening and there are no untoward noises from it, cutting out under full throttle (usually only above 3000rpm) is usually due to a fuel supply problem with this engine. (In tank pump, under bonnet pump, a leaking injector, sticking HP pump control solenoid)

A Tu3 will place extra demands on the fuel system so if you do have a fuel supply issue, the cutting out will be worse with a Tu3 fitted. If it is a turbo problem, then the Tu3 will show up any lack of air as more smoke in the exhaust.
