drive belts gone !!!

Driving down m40 dash lights up like a christmas tree. AA man pops the lid and says "drive belts gone"!!!!
nice one ! anyone know wot this will cost ? is it easy ?? anyone need some cash ???? leamington area

Can you remember what happened before the lights came on? Did you change down a cog too far?

Could be nasty, if the AA man is correct, bent valves etc
 
From the description (and assuming the engine still runs) sounds more like auxillary belt to me. Dash lights caused due to electrics out when belt is off alternator. Also, he would be a very talented AA man to see the cam belt gone with a quick visual, external examination of the engine!!

Auxillary belt is not a big deal. Just give a local mechanic a call to get sorted. Should only be cost of belt and tensioner plus however long it takes him to fit them.

Was thinking that myself but the AA man could have just undone the first few bolts and opened the cover and peered in

I wouldnt do that if I were you, you could cause even more harm, it could have been the tensioner coming loose, belt still intact, timing up the left,

Best to rotate the engine by hand at the crank pulley nut and long lever, any resistance will show the valves hitting the piston crowns.

Plus the pulley nut isnt the easiest to get at with the undertray and RHS splash shield in place, I couldnt imagine the AA man undoing all that at the roadside, he would have just peered in the bonnet and got out the towing cable. Those guys wont exert themselves, they might get oil on their yellow shirts, easier for them to tow to the nearest garage.

now the saga ..........
mobile machanic lifts the lid and stares silent with a slow shake of his head..
" yep aux belt "..." no both belts" " yr alternator hanging ,its sheared off its bolts " .After more tutting and silent head shaking, it turns out that the alternator had been botched on with wrong bolts !!!! air con unit also hanging !! The 30 -40 quid job now looking 200-400 !! and i havent told him it uses lots of water, and on bumps there is a clunk from offside wheel !!!!
Its decision time.. FIGHT OR FLIGHT.. FIX OR DUMP .. WATCH THIS SPACE:
