Drained my transfer box, bronze metal on magnet!

I'm not sure what you mean about leaves? The yellowish metal on the magnet was definitely magnetised, and there were a few smaller curfs of it that I removed before I thought to take a picture.
The transfer box does have play in the center diff, you can tell when you're slowly maneuvering off road etc in low box, it all is a little clunky but to be expected with this age and mileage.
Just somewhat concerning when you find any shards of metal this big on the drain plug, whatever type it is....

I meant leaves as in what falls off trees, a bit of a joke, which has only got funnier by explaining.

I personally worry about ragged chewed up bits of metal. Out with of that I would base the need for a rebuild based on what you find ‘clinically’. Too much play or leaking too much - probs for a rebuild. If not much play leaks can be kept on top off - probs wait until the aforementioned reach threshold and rebuild then.

saying that I did once have catastrophic transfer box failure 50miles into a 600mile journey so what do I know.

When I took mine apart I got a flake of yellow coloured metal too. Mine was from the yoke that moves the splined slider back and forth to engage the difflock. Where it rubs on the sides of the groove the yellow metal burrs over and makes a flake over a long period of time. I know, because on mine it was still attached by a few molecules. Before too long it would have fallen off and been floating around in the oil just like yours.

Thank you Brown, very informative! Just the answer I hoped for, I'm interested more than anything else! Thanks again!

Haha! Oh I see! I was scratching my head desperately trying to recall anything in the hidden recess' of my memory that a part in a landy gearbox was referred to as a leave! All I could think of was leaf springs!! :D

And no, like you say, as and when. I've put the recommended synthetic 75/90 back in and I have a slight seep (very hot day and towing trailer) from what I think is the sump gasket on the transfer box, everything is working well though, and keeping ontop of oil changes etc she should hopefully see me through a few more years before I have to do some proper surgery! Thanks for your replies on here!

Refill the transfer box, take ‘er for a spin and then recheck the magnet again for foreign particles.

Nah, I'm not overly worried. I've had a few good replies on here as to the diagnosis, been driving her for a week and everything selects fine, just an old landy doing old landy things.
I'll check again in 8k! :)
