Downgearing into first and transfer box....

Cheers for that. Mine does have 2nd gear crunch. I'm due to change box oil, but iirc it doesn't have atf in it. We do about 300 miles aweek in ours as its the every day car, so how often do i need to be dropping the box oil. I've just done axle, and transferbox oils.

For what it costs and the protection it gives I'm a fan of regular oil changes in all components.

So I would say once every 6 months or 7500mls, unless you offroad (including wading). If you do offroad, the stresses on all components are far higher than straightforward onroad driving, so I would halve the intervals. And that goes the same for your tranny box and diffs, particularly the rear diff.

How long does it take and how much does it cost, for the piece of mind it gives, never mind improved running and reliability.

As most of us don't do high miles in these cars, ignore the LR schedule and change your oil once a year or more if you off-road.

The official gearbox oil change interval IS once a year (or 12,000 miles, whichever is first).
