Morning all,

Just wondering - I've been running series Land Rovers daily for the past 4 years and can double declutch seamlessly when driving and from a cold start - a chap told me a while back to put into 4th and then shift into 1st/2nd before pulling off. However (regardless of the mark, gearbox and engine size) when I put the car in neutral after being on the road for a while, at a set of lights for instance, there is always a slight crunch when pulling off again. Is there a knack to eliminating this i.e touching the revs with the little toe or is it just part and parcel of no synchro in the lower gears?
Cheers

Revs could be a touch high, there will always be a bit of a crunch as there is no synchro ring on first or second. As you say, selecting 4th first can help if it won't go in

Thanks for the quick reply. Potentially. It'll always go in but I've had it with both Series 1's and 2's with v8's, tdi's and 2.25 petrols and with both recon and original gearboxes. Always wondered whether it was something I was doing as it's only ever slight but whilst driving and from a cold start it's always quiet as a church mouse.

The gearbox is at rest and having the layshafts etc all lined up is hit and miss. As said sliding the shafts by selecting a syncro'd gear (3 or 4) will give the gearbox more of a chance, also that extra bit of delay on the pedal (and the internal friction caused by selecting a gear) gives the input shaft a chance to stop spinning resulting in less crunch. 4th and 3rd are the first gears on the input shaft which is why you select them ...

My 91 defender does a little crunch sometimes in first, I almost automatically go to 4th first before first and it all but eliminates it
