Door Mirror Problem

Hi All,

I have developed a problem with one of my door mirrors on my 06 Freelander. when I flick the swich inside to open the mirrors out sometimes only the one works the other just stays tucked in against the door window. Other times it will work with no problem then sometimes it won't go back in when the swich is flicked.

Has anybody come across the same thing and if so what did you do to fix the problem.

I occasionally have the same problem - maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

I am certain that 99% of the time its because someone has perhaps bumped against the mirror, and repositioned it. The switch then needs to be operated 2 or 3 times to return to normal.

Last ferry crossing I was on, I was sat in the car with the mirrors folded in and someone accidentally pushed one mirror nearer the window. It didn't fold out under its own power. I repositioned it - it still didn't respond until I had switched off the key and tried twice more.

Just one of those quirky things - its always behaved like that - for no apparent reason. I just accept it and don't think that the motor is on the way out - which is what I thought the first couple of times.
 
The fold-in mirrors on our FL sometimes work and sometimes don,t. I took the switch out to clean it but didn't take it apart as it just looked like there would be lots of minute parts inside that would jump out all over the place.
 
Thanks for getting back lads. I don't think it's the switch as the mirror on the drivers side works fine I think it's more to do with the gearing inside the mirror housing that makes it move in and out is causing the problem. It's just strange that sometimes it works and other times it won't and it's bugging me arrrrrrrrh.
 
My wifes pug 307 had this last year with the snow. Seems any excess weight on the mirror stops it opening so i would say a good shot of wd40 if nothing else to make it run smoothly. The gearing/mechanism may be gunged up or sticky.
 
Just had a quick look at mine again, there seems to be a circular cover plate on the underside of the mirror housing, just wondering if by taking the plate off this will give access to the gearing. Might be easier to remove the mirror from the door to do this otherwise i'll be on my knees looking up.

No, that gives you access to nothing, I'm afraid. It and the four screws just hold the mirror on.
 
When I purchased mine, the NSF mirror wouldn't fold in. On inspection I found a previous owner had screwed a 3cm long self taping screw up through (what I beleive is) the drain hole.

Removing the screw, and the mirror folded in, but would not fold out, just a clacking sound from the mechanism.

So, currently, the mirror has been manually folded out, (the screw re-inserted) and I have eventually secured a replacement off Ebay, so I will ask my 'tame' mechanic to fit it for me when it's in 'dry-dock' next.

Sorry for reviving the thread. As in first post I'm now having problems with the driver side fold in/out mirror. I fixed the n/s mirror with a self tapper to hold it in the out possition but now the driver side has gone as well it look like I'm going to have to fork out on a pair of new mirrows.

I have been looking on the bay for replacements and have found a pair of mirrors to fit but it says they are heated mirrors and my mirrors are not heated will these still be fine to use or is there wiring provided in the loom to connect for the heated mirrors.

Any thoughts more than welcome.

Just happened across this thread and it looks like intermittent operation of the power fold mirrors is quite common then…

Mine are working as advertised for time being…

Don't know about fitting heated mirrors to non heated mirror FL, but would say it depends on the connector, whether it is a common type.

I'm sure someone here will know;)

Hi,

yes it seems the mirror problem is quite common. After taking mine apart to see if the pins were broken off I found out that my mirrors are the heated ones, I have no switch to turn them on but can only assume they come on when the rear de-mist is activated.

Mine have phases where they won't work. It happened a while ago where one only folded out about half way, or lately they both wouldn't fold out. Not sure where the problem lies…

Anyhoo, I think the heated mirrors are an on all the time thing or they may be controlled by a sensor, but not by the heated screen switch.

I may be wrong, just don't tell the wife;)
 
i got the problem on my mine i am going to take them off and have a look. I got someone to operate the swich and i put my ear near the mirror if you can hear the motor going round like my two i guess it is the gearing as they work sometimes
 
It's a common problem. I suspect it's the motor in the fold mechanism failing. Maybe the commutator is burnt in one location. This would account for the randomness of the failure to fold. If the motor stops on burnt section of commutator, the motor doesn't run.
 
Had a similar problem with the Mercedes we had in our 'fleet'. Usually down to something obstructing or knocking the mirror towards the window....Solution was to 'power' the door mirrors to open and close. This would normally be a minum of two 'power up' cycles to get to a reset.. On the 'daughters' TD4 she didn't realise we(I mean she) had power mirrors and 'was well chuffed' when I showed her the latest undiscovered gadget.....so we set about cleaning them as they were a little tired looking on the trim bits...Off she went.....next day, 'Dad, my windows are not working in the back' to be followed by, 'Daaaad, my mirrors ain't working no more'.......I guess that lack of use of 'said' parts whilst it was sat in the vendors yard may have contributed to this but ATM the grandkids can't drop the windows(result) but on the negative side, neither can my daughter....think the mirrors are stuck open......I do have a 'Jobs List' for that car........a VERY big jobs list.....
