So both the passenger doors, and the back door on my disco all have the similar problem of not being able to open without the key/ holding the lock up.

It's the gremlin, where the lock unlocks fine on the central locking, but when you've applied about 75% pressure to the handle, the lock drops by a fraction so you can't open it without holding it up.

I thought I'd tackle the job today, so starting with the front passenger door, I've taken the door card off, exposed all the relevant mechanism, the only thing I'm confused about, is that the door spring, that I imagined would need replacing, seems to be in fine condition. There just seems to be extra slop in the mechanism.

Maybe the spring is stretched a bit? and therefore not functioning as it should.
I will order new springs today, and when they come next week, change them anyway, just to be sure, but I can't see it fixing the problem, because as I say; the spring on there seems to be fine.

It's a tad confusing, not made any easier, by the fact you have to work in those poxy little cut-outs on the inner door!

Sounds like a similar problem to what I had with mine. The best way to solve it I found was to remove the barrels and leave to soak in wd40 or similar for a few hours. Mine had rusted together so when ever I locked it a couple of the locks would pop up again leaving me worrying if It will be there when I returned. If you can't remove them just give them a shot ow wd40 every half hour and wiggle it with the key or by hand.
