This is my first post. I’ve joined because I’m at the end of my tether with my Freelander 2 TD4 (07), and I was hoping that people with superior knowledge of these beasts might be able to shine some light on the most recent problem. I love this car, but it seems to be failing on so many things lately.
It has done 154k miles. It had a new clutch a few months ago, and new front tyres, swiftly followed by new rear wheel bearings and rear tyres. The front wheel bearings also need replacing now too.
Yesterday, whilst accelerating in 2nd gear, there was a loud bang from the front of the car, a horrible burning/smoke smell (though no smoke to be seen) and it lost power, juddering along at about 10 mph. I stopped the car, waited for a while, then started it again which it did without a problem. But it wouldn’t go above a hesitant crawl. It was towed away and is awaiting a mechanic to come and look at it.
I have no mechanical knowledge, but was hoping someone might recognise these symptoms and be able to offer a suggestion as to their cause? It sounded pretty horrendous, so I’m half excepting someone to say they think it could be something major
