Sorry if this sound like a stupid question but, is there some way of cleaning inside the cylinders without taking the engine apart?

I recently bought a TD4 freelander commercial and was advised by a friend that i should change the pcv valve, so i changed it for bmw replacement then i looked through forums for any other problems and came across egr, cant afford to bypass at the moment the kit i want is £55 from ebay and has comes with a blanking cap that bolts onto the exhaust manifold so the pipe can be removed, anyway so i took it off and cleaned it. now i know it was put on for emission but i cant see how it works if you go to all the effort of cooling the air why then add hot exhaust gas to it at the last minute. My biggest concern is the carbon build up in the engine, I have added redex to clean the injectors but wondered if there is another additive for that will clean the cylinders, pistons, etc. or if the head would have to come off. You may have noticed im not a mechanic and i could well be wrong about an excessive carbon build up.
The Freelander does seem down on power it's done 126k but has less pull then my old k series when towing especially at low speed and pulling away.
I was thinking about remapping does anyone have any advise or recommendations.

Did see something a specialist garage may be able to provide on 'wheeler dealers' recently :behindsofa:, supposed to give the engine an internal clean. Certainly seemed to do the trick??

As above.

I think what you want to do is remove the inlet manifold (not the intake ducting) and clean all the **** out of it. This will stop this buildup from entering your engine, although i dont honestly see the point of it.

Then again im lazy.

I have tried searching for a product but couldn't find anything will look up wheeler dealers thanks for that.
Tried to clean inlet manifold just got covered in crap and not very successful.

My remapped TD4 ES premium was incredibly better than before, gonna get my latest one done soon. If you need a recommendation, pm me..........ebt

all the standard td 4's i drove seemed sluggish compared to k series, tis why i never bought one.

Well mine ain't 'sluggish' either - unless slugs could see off my nephew's BMW 'standard' 320D.

But I can accept that a good example K will be better than a poor TD4 - but they are definitely not all like that.

I's got a Synergy2a+ - goes like sh*t of the proverbial.

I only bought a Freelander because BMW (who owned LR at the time) had stuck a decent engine in it.

I'm not changing it for a FL2 because it's got a PSA Peugot-Citreon lump in it.

A well-maintained, well sorted (throw away the EGR for a start) M47R is one of the best diesels around.

Singvogel.

Going back to yo original Q - yes yu can clean the combustion area by injecting a small amount of water into the intake, but its quite a risky op.

Hi Dan

There is a plethora of info on here with regard to cleaning / replacing engine parts in order to improve performance........ as Singvogel said, when a TD4 is tip top it goes like stink, mine is an 01 and since replacing and cleaning (be prepared to get a little oily) certain engine parts, it runs extremely well.
Glean as much info on here with regard to EGR / PCV or crankcase breather / inlet manifold cleaning, get your tools out and get busy!! You'll save yourself a pretty penny and get to know your FL too :)

Thanks for all you help, does anyone have any tips for cleaning the inlet manifold. I just poured diesel through it but wasn't to pleased with the results, dont have a parts cleaner and wasn't sure if soaking the part in cleaner or diesel was a good idea because its plastic. Does the Ecotek PowerBoost work with diesels because some i have seen are only for petrol engines. has anyone used this product? it does look quite good so may consider using it.

I chuck a litre of mineral based ATF in with the diesel on fill up to clean out combustion chambers, the rag the fok out of it. Do your own research on this though if you have any doubts. Works a charm..
