Doh! Doh! Doh! Just pulled boot door handle off!

Been having problems with the boot door lock since we bought the car. I knew about the issue but thought it would be something simple, so after taking it apart I found it is a faulty switch in the lock so ordered some parts and made a temporary fix.
Unfortunately the temp fix didn't work so went to look at it again tonight and pulled the handle clean off

Here's why

I thought you guys said Hippos don't rust.

So now I have to fix the broken handle, repair the rust hole and on top of everything I just realised I bought the solenoid instead of the lock.

Not a great day but I can't complain, my brother in law's wife (my wifes sister in law) just had a stroke yesterday.
Kinda puts things in perspective

you have a scrap yard in n/Ireland and I have seen stuff advertised on the EBay try him for another lock or even a good back door , one thing you will never get rust on the front wings,

Common problem happened on my 53facelift most folks don't even know they have rust untill handle comes off as the handle hides the rust untill the bolt pulls through.

I have to look at the wife's car back handle as it has come out a bit but I can not see any rust though ,I think it may be due to the fact she had a problem with the glass and tried opening it and I think she has pulled the bolt out a bit.

There are only three bolts holding the handle on and the plastic moulding ain't overly strong, I've used epoxy resin to try and repair it but I think until I do something to repair the hole it will be weak.
I could weld in a new piece of metal but would damage the surrounding paint so will probably go with pop riveting instead.

I don't like using 2nd hand for something like this where wear and tear are an issue so for now will disconnect the switch again and hold the handle up while closing the door. Micro switches are a pain, the motorized valves in my house all gave trouble so I ended up replacing them with relays.

Had the same problem with my 55 reg, read about the rust problem on here and found a great big rusty hole. Decided it was time to change to something that needed less maintenance, hopefully.

Had exactly the same problem....large rust hole above the number plate and out of sight until you looked up at the number plate lights

Luckily the paint on my car is Epsom Green (Very popular) and I got a stripped door from a breaker in Bedworth called "Cheapest Parts" on Ebay, it was in pristine condition, the same colour and cost £40 collected. He also sells the handles and may do a deal on the two. Took me a day-with numerous brews & fags to swap over and I needed a hand to refit the door afterwards. I gave the interior of the door a good Waxoyling and put a bead of sealant on the plastic handle gasket.
The studs on the handles are notorious for rusting and just pull out of the handle where they are moulded in....a good coat of copper grease or similar to help prevent further rust before fitting may help. The sealant definately stops water getting behind the handle.

Did a quick patch up job last night with a bit of metal cut to size and pop riveted in. I cut it small enough to just fit through the hole and riveted it on the inside.
I would have welded it but it's not structural and welding would have damaged the paint. I rubbed off the loose rust, ground away the weakest metal and painted on Hammerite Kurust treatmeant, then a quick spray with undercoat and lacquer (undercoat doesn't prevent rust on it's own) before bolting back together.
It's a long way from a professional fix but will buy another couple of years.

Changed my mind about 2nd hand when I saw the price of new, ordered a replacement lock mechanism off ebay and fitted tonight.
All working correctly for the first time since buying the car. Can't complain though as I knew about it when buying and used the issue as a bargaining chip.
