Yes, I saw the dye penetrant test performed - a circumfrential crack about half way down.

A second-hand lump is going to go in. Thanks for all the advice!

Phew, thank goodness, looks far too nice a Disco to die. Hope it all works out.
 
I was going to suggest either option B or C, then got to the bit where you had gone for one of those options.

I would still add that it might be a good idea to keep your new head and block with the worn parts to make up a spare engine as time and finances allow you to get the bits and build it up.

Wish mine looked as good as yours!
 
A good choice. My TD5 is trundling along ok for now (just after a replacement transfer box) and my wife was thinking about us upgrading (or downgrading whichever way you look at it) at an LR3 in the summer after getting the LR bug. After showing her some of the horror stories about LR3 MOT failures etc we've decided to put the cash into our D2 with a rebuilt engine, box etc to give us some worry free motoring for the next five years. I prefer the look of the D2 over the D3/4 anyway.
