Reason I'm asking firstly is ignorance, secondly I have a lever but it wont move over from the high/low ratio, which does work.

I'm far from an expert, but no, yours and mine don't have a difflock. I think the reason is the clever electronics manage the serious off road stuff. Not tried mine in any serious off road stuff yet but with the traction control in action, it copes with most things! I'm sure the more technical members will explain in detail!

up to 2001 there are some with the whole setup others only with the "hardware" in the tranfer box but without linkage, after 2001 or t has the whole thing working or nothing at all

Not all Disco 2's were fitted with diff-lock.
On some models it was fitted as standard, on some others it was an option and on yet others it just wasn't available at all.
On some models the internal workings are in the transfer box and on others they weren't installed.
Confusing isn't it.
The only way to check these days is to get out and get under!
Check on the top of the transfer box, towards the front end and if there is a spigot sticking up then the internals are there, the only thing that's needed is he lever mechanism and a fair bit of work to fit it.
Some swear by having a centre diff lock available, other just let the electronic traction control do its stuff.

From my understanding (at least Australian exports) 1999 and 2000 models years had the cdl internals but not the linkage, so if needs be (and with an 11mm spanner i believe) you can get under the car and manually lock the cdl even if you don't have the shifter linkage. 2001 and 2002 models don't have the internals full stop and then they put the cdl back in for 2003 and 2004 with the linkage as standard. If you have an eariler one with the internals but not the linkage, when you go to engage the cdl when the car is off the traction control will be disable when you start the car and will come back on when disengaged and the car restarted, if you do it with the car running you have both the cdl and tc working together which make for a pretty unstoppable unit!

No pre-facelift D2's had a working difflock, although the mechanism inside the transfer case was all there. The SLABS ECU threw a wobbler if you engaged it by moving the lever on top of the transfer box front housing and turned the difflock light on.

Later D2's had the option of the whole setup including the linkage and the modified SLABS ECU.

Our D2 was build in November 1998 and has the full difflock set inside the transfer box but no linkage to the Hi/Low lever.

ive retro fitted diff lock to my 04 landmark, you can swop the front housing from an earlier tranny box that had difflock fitted, and its do able with the box on the car, then linkaged up using the ashcroft kit,
need to alter the wiring to the diff light though, as I used the 2 spade connectors hanging by the manual box, but with diff lock engaged the auto gearbox transmission over heat light is on, so need some knowledgeable chap to tell me which wires to splice into

No pre-facelift D2's had a working difflock, ....

IMO that's wrong...i've seen 2000 MY D2 with factory fitted diff-lock, it was an option

open a dedicated thread for this and i'll tell you what to do ;)... you need RAVE for the connector views

Correct :)

If not fitted as standard, even with the face lift models if not standard it was an option.
For the 2002MY the option was £260 and 2004MY the option was £270.

Although I have the sales brochures for all 1996 onwards model years which I pick up when my disco was in for service, but as I wasn't that interested I didn't pick up all the price list price list at the same time :(
