Back in the 1960-70s it was felt that getting the reg numbers etched on all the glass would deter ringers as it was too expensive to replace it but I suppose Landys are broken up more than wrung. Maybe if we could invent a way of stamping the reg numbers on all panels.
There's a kit being offered through LRO mag (was in their Dec'11 edition) that could do this type of job. £35.25 posted worldwide and can be ordered from Retainagroup on +44 (0) 1233 333000. From memory the contents of the pack ordered seperately are around £45'ish
Landywatch got a bit involved with the manufacturers from the outset and then LRO stepped in and took it on. Basically it's glass etching and also some UV self etching stickers for key body panels and some UV stencils for plastic parts.
Here's a bit more info....(piccy is of a sample pack I was sent when we were getting involved through Landywatch)
Contents as follows (all stencils/stickers have the consistent unique code that would be linked to your vehicle)
10 x glass stencils + etching fluid + instructions
18 x UV self etch ultra destruct body panel labels + instructions
7 x UV ultra destruct stencils and UV marking fluid + instructions
2 x Window warning stickers.
1 x Vehicle registration form.
1 x Credit card sized plastic card for recording your unique code.
Basically, you mark the truck and then register it against the unique code. All the markings have a phone number that anyone buying a truck or panels from the truck, can then call, quote the code and verify if the vehicle is logged as stolen. On the body panels, you'd need to use UV light to see the markings if the stickers themselves are removed.
As an alternative, some folk use
Smart Water or
Select DNA
I guess all of these types of marking kits are VERY mild deterrents if warning stickers are put on the truck. In terms of the UV marking, it does rely on a buyer checking the part with a UV light in advance of course. How many people actually do that ? It's not perfect by an means but it's another element that may just help to put more doubt in the mind of the thieving scrotes
As a low-tech alternative, buy a number/letter punch set and stamp key parts, with perhaps the last 7 digits of the VIN ?
